No one can escape “The Hunting Wives” phenomenon, not even the cast of “Saturday Night Live.”
During the Oct. 11 episode of the NBC sketch comedy series — hosted by alum Amy Poehler with musical guest Role Model — the show poked fun at the popular Netflix drama starring Brittany Snow and Malin Åkerman with a fake trailer.
In a sketch teasing what could happen in the highly-anticipated second season of the series, a voiceover began, “Millions of Americans tuned in for Season 1 of ‘The Hunting Wives,’ straight but lesbian, horny republican murder drama, and now it’s back for more.”
Chloe Fineman appears as Snow’s character, Sophie, and reveals she has been released from prison. Poehler, portraying Åkerman’s character, Margo, with a similar wig, welcomes her with open arms. Cast member Sarah Sherman and featured player Ashley Padilla also play characters from the Netflix hit.
The sketch featured similar camera shots to “Hunting Wives,” teasing that “thighs will be squeezed” and “guns will be drawn” in the upcoming installment of the show.
“And things get even crazier when a new, new girl joins the group,” a voiceover announces to introduce Aubrey Plaza, as the live studio audience erupts into applause. In one scene, Poehler, Fineman, Sherman and Padilla all stand close together to sensually help Plaza pour champagne to make a mimosa.
At the end of the sketch, the voiceover advises, “‘The Hunting Wives’ Season 2. Don’t watch it on a plane.”
Fans in the YouTube comments pointed out how “SNL” nailed the tone of “The Hunting Wives.”
“This is LITERALLY the show,” one said.
Another wrote, “Whoever wrote this sketch deserves a raise.”
A third said, “Leave it to Poehler to bring back that ‘old SNL’ vibe with the nice mix of pop culture spoofs and original sketches.”
Netflix reacted to the “SNL” trailer, with the streamer’s official X account posting a screenshot of Plaza, Poehler, Fineman, Sherman and Padilla. The account wrote, “seated.”
Shortly after it arrived on Netflix on July 21, “The Hunting Wives,” based on the novel of the same name by May Cobb, became a major success. The erotic drama is centered around the relationship between Sophie, who moves from Boston to East Texas with her architect husband, and a group of wealthy Southern housewives who are known as the “Hunting Wives.”
The leader of the group is Margo, who Sophie becomes close to before their friendship develops into an affair. Meanwhile, the social circle is also grappling with the murder of a local teenager.
Åkerman and Snow confirmed in a social media video posted on Sept. 12 that the show will return for a second season. The amusing clip ended with Åkerman — in a wig Margo would certainly approve of — announcing in her best Texas drawl, “Pack your boots and load your guns. We’re going back to Maple Brook for Season 2, baby!”
In a statement shared to Netflix’s site Tudum, executive producer Rebecca Cutter said about the upcoming season, “I’m so excited to write these amazing characters again. And I can’t wait to take the audience on another sexy, twisted, bats— crazy ride through Maple Brook.”
