The long-gestating โPractical Magicโ sequel hopes to cast a spell over moviegoers.
Warner Bros. Pictures announced July 11 that the original filmโs stars, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, will be joined by a pair of other acclaimed stars who appeared in the first movie, as well as a group of other actors new to the series.
The studio confirmed in 2024 that a sequel to the beloved 1998 film was happening, with Kidman saying she and Bullock would be back to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters.
โYes I will be in it. And Sandy (Bullock) will be in it,โ she told People. โAnd thatโs that. Thereโs a lot more to tell which is why we go, โOK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.โโ
The sequel, set to be released Sept. 18, 2026, will be directed by Susanne Bier, who previously collaborated with Bullock on 2018โs โBird Box.โ
Original ‘Practical Magic’ Stars Returning for the Sequel
Oscar winners Kidman and Bullock are the key pieces, for sure, but they will be getting some fellow Academy Award-sized help. Dianne Wiest will return as Aunt Jet, while Stockard Channing will once again play Aunt Franny. The studio describes the characters as โthe eccentric and wise matriarchs who taught the Owens sisters everything they know about magic, mischief and self-reliance.โ
Wiest has won a pair of best supporting actress Oscars: one for โHannah and Her Sistersโ and another for โBullets Over Broadway.โ Channing was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her work in 1993โs โSix Degrees of Separation.โ
Warner Bros. made no mention of any other stars from the first movie, including Aidan Quinn, Goran Visnjic, Evan Rachel Wood, Mark Feuerstein or Margo Martindale.
