Famke Janssen said during a recent appearance at Spacecon 2026 (via Popverse), that Marvel โmade a mistakeโ by not bringing her back as Jean Grey for Decemberโs โAvengers: Doomsday.โ
โI am so bad at keeping secrets that I always say to everyone Iโm the worst actor in the world. Itโs all on my face. You right away will read it,โ Janssen said. โI think they made a mistake, but hey, who am I? Iโm just a little me who thinks that.โ
Janssen first appeared as the telepath Jean Grey, aka Phoenix, in 2000โs โX-Men,โ and then reprised the role for 2003โs โX2: X-Men Unitedโ and 2006โs โX-Men: The Last Stand.โ She also briefly appeared as Grey in 2013โs โThe Wolverineโ and 2014โs โX-Men: Days of Future Past.โ
Janssenโs absence from โDoomsdayโ is notable, considering Marvel is bringing back many of her โX-Menโ co-stars for the film. Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) are all set to return.
In an October 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Janssen said in every interview she does, sheโs asked about the future of Jean Grey in the MCU.
โItโs interesting,โ Janssen said. โI didnโt realize that was such a big part. Every interview I do, that will come up, and of everything I say, that is going to be the only thing thatโs gonna be printed.โ
โI should be flattered, I suppose, that this character has resonated with people,โ she added. โItโs been so long, but itโs nice that people are still talking about her. Iโm sure every single time thereโs a new movie that theyโre doing, like [is it] โDoomsday?โ โฆ itโll come up again.โ
