Famke Janssen Says Marvel Made a Mistake By Casting Her in ‘Doomsday’

Famke Janssen said during a recent appearance at Spacecon 2026 (via Popverse), that Marvel โ€œmade a mistakeโ€ by not bringing her back as Jean Grey for Decemberโ€™s โ€œAvengers: Doomsday.โ€

โ€œI am so bad at keeping secrets that I always say to everyone Iโ€™m the worst actor in the world. Itโ€™s all on my face. You right away will read it,โ€ Janssen said. โ€œI think they made a mistake, but hey, who am I? Iโ€™m just a little me who thinks that.โ€

Janssen first appeared as the telepath Jean Grey, aka Phoenix, in 2000โ€™s โ€œX-Men,โ€ and then reprised the role for 2003โ€™s โ€œX2: X-Men Unitedโ€ and 2006โ€™s โ€œX-Men: The Last Stand.โ€ She also briefly appeared as Grey in 2013โ€™s โ€œThe Wolverineโ€ and 2014โ€™s โ€œX-Men: Days of Future Past.โ€

Janssenโ€™s absence from โ€œDoomsdayโ€ is notable, considering Marvel is bringing back many of her โ€œX-Menโ€ co-stars for the film. Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) are all set to return.

In an October 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Janssen said in every interview she does, sheโ€™s asked about the future of Jean Grey in the MCU.

โ€œItโ€™s interesting,โ€ Janssen said. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize that was such a big part. Every interview I do, that will come up, and of everything I say, that is going to be the only thing thatโ€™s gonna be printed.โ€

โ€œI should be flattered, I suppose, that this character has resonated with people,โ€ she added. โ€œItโ€™s been so long, but itโ€™s nice that people are still talking about her. Iโ€™m sure every single time thereโ€™s a new movie that theyโ€™re doing, like [is it] โ€˜Doomsday?โ€™ โ€ฆ itโ€™ll come up again.โ€
