Six years after Scott Brooks was killed during a robbery attempt, his twin brother prepares for an emotional trial.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After six long years, the trial for the two men accused of killing Brooks’ Sandwich House co-owner Scott Brooks during a robbery attempt at the family’s iconic NoDa restaurant is underway.
Steven Staples and Terry Connor are charged with murder in the 2019 killing that devastated the tight-knit community and drew citywide attention.
David Brooks, Scott’s twin brother, says he’s preparing for an emotional process but is eager to see the case move forward.
“I’m looking forward to hearing the opening statements and getting this trial underway and get some justice for my brother,” Brooks said.
The family has continued to run Brooks’ Sandwich House through grief, supported by loyal customers and other small business owners who have stepped in to help.
“The community here in NoDa has wrapped their arms around us, just as tight as a family would,” Brooks said.
For many, the restaurant is more than a place to grab a burger or a bologna sandwich. It’s a Charlotte landmark that represents family, faith and resilience.
Longtime customer Robert Alexander says Scott’s memory still lingers every time he visits.
“I come here and sometimes I tear up because Scott,” Alexander said. “I miss him so much. He just didn’t deserve that.”
The Hill Bar and Grill is among the local businesses lending staff so the Brooks family can be present at the trial.
“We need a little bit of help during this difficult time,” Brooks said. “We’ve had other people step in, people in other businesses like Dave Andrews and his crew at The Hill Bar and Grill. They’re just like family, and what a wonderful feeling.”
Community members say their continued support is one way to honor Scott Brooks’ life and legacy.
“My heart breaks for my brother,” Brooks said. “But my heart warms for the attention that we are getting.”
Opening statements in the trial of Staples and Connor could start as early as Friday after two additional alternate jurors were selected. One more is needed before opening statements can begin.
