John Stamos suddenly got quite a name all around the place this weekend.
The former โFull Houseโ actor stepped in to portray King Herod in โJesus Christ Superstarโ at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday, Aug. 1, replacing Josh Gad after he tested positive for COVID-19.
โWellโฆ this weekend just got Biblical,โ Stamos wrote on social media Thursday, July 31. โIโm stepping in as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the @HollywoodBowl, starring the brilliant @cynthiaerivo . King @Joshgad unexpectedly got hit with COVID (feel better soon, brother!)and while I didnโt push him down the stairs, I am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lamรฉ.โ
Sharing a photo smiling and lounging among golden feathers, Stamos called the opportunity an โhonorโ and a โdream.โ
โAnd also a little insane becauseโฆ I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off,โ he continued. โWish me luck. And letโs rock the Bowl.โ
On Wednesday, July 30, Gad announced he tested positive for COVID-19 and would not be performing in the show until he tested negative.
โIt truly breaks my heart, but I can assure you all that the show is going to be one of the greatest things you will ever see,โ he wrote at the time.
In a Friday post, Gad shared a photo of Cynthia Erivo, who stars as Jesus in the production, seemingly in rehearsal, saying she is โnot of this earth.โ He also praised Stamos prior to his performance, writing, โI know @johnstamos will be equally brilliant and I know that all of you who are fortunate enough to be in attendance will have a memory for the rest of your days.โ
โRarely have I had the opportunity to witness up close such profound brilliance and artistry. I am truly bummed that I will not be able to perform this evening with this cast,โ Gad wrote.
He highlighted the performances of the star-studded โJesus Christ Superstarโ cast, including Adam Lambert, who plays Judas; Phillipa Soo, who plays Mary Magdalene; Milo Manheim, who plays Peter; Raรบl Esparza, who plays Pontius Pilate; Brian Justin Crum, who plays Annas; and Tyrone Huntley, who plays Simon.
On the website for the Hollywood Bowl, Stamos is currently listed as the actor who will portray King Herod for the rest of the weekend’s shows.
But on Friday, Gad announced he had tested negative for COVID. Then Aug. 2, accompanying a photo seemingly in costume, the “Frozen” actor wrote, “See you all Sunday night,” hinting he’d return for the Aug. 3 show.
