The long-gestating “Practical Magic” sequel hopes to cast a spell over moviegoers.
Warner Bros. Pictures announced July 11 that the original film’s stars, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, will be joined by a pair of other acclaimed stars who appeared in the first movie, as well as a group of other actors new to the series.
The studio confirmed in 2024 that a sequel to the beloved 1998 film was happening, with Kidman saying she and Bullock would be back to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters.
“Yes I will be in it. And Sandy (Bullock) will be in it,” she told People. “And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’”
The sequel, set to be released Sept. 18, 2026, will be directed by Susanne Bier, who previously collaborated with Bullock on 2018’s “Bird Box.”
Original ‘Practical Magic’ Stars Returning for the Sequel
Oscar winners Kidman and Bullock are the key pieces, for sure, but they will be getting some fellow Academy Award-sized help. Dianne Wiest will return as Aunt Jet, while Stockard Channing will once again play Aunt Franny. The studio describes the characters as “the eccentric and wise matriarchs who taught the Owens sisters everything they know about magic, mischief and self-reliance.”
Wiest has won a pair of best supporting actress Oscars: one for “Hannah and Her Sisters” and another for “Bullets Over Broadway.” Channing was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her work in 1993’s “Six Degrees of Separation.”
Warner Bros. made no mention of any other stars from the first movie, including Aidan Quinn, Goran Visnjic, Evan Rachel Wood, Mark Feuerstein or Margo Martindale.
Newcomers to the ‘Practical Magic 2’ Cast
The second film will feature a lot of new faces, but they are faces fans may have seen before in other projects. Here’s a look:
- Joey King — The Emmy nominee has appeared in “The Act,” “Bullet Train” and the “Kissing Booth” film series.
- Maisie Williams — Williams is best known for her work as Arya Stark on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” a role which earned her a pair of Emmy nominations.
- Lee Pace — Pace is an Emmy nominee, having garnered a nomination for his work on the short-lived ABC series “Pushing Daisies.” He’s also appeared in “Halt and Catch Fire” and in the “The Hobbit” film trilogy, as well as blockbusters “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Captain Marvel.”
- Xolo Maridueña — Maridueña first rose to prominence on the NBC drama “Parenthood” before finding further success with “Cobra Kai.” In 2023, he made the jump to the big screen in “Blue Beetle.”
- Solly McLeod — The British actor was in the TV miniseries “Tom Jones,” as well as the film “The Dead Don’t Hurt.” He’s also appeared in two episodes of “House of the Dragon.”
