Brett Young Explains On Why He Quit Drinking 1 Year Ago After Having Kids

Brett Young says he’s doing more than creating music. He’s creating a new lifestyle, too.

Ahead of his June 25 TODAY performance of “Drink With You” for the Citi Concert Series, the 44-year-old country music singer reflected on the meaning behind his newly released studio album, “2.0,” and how a health transformation was part of its inspiration.

“The obvious grab was that we have a new version of ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’ on the record,” Young explained during an interview before his performance. The singer explained that the new version now includes a woman’s perspective.

Re-examining the song prompted Young to examine some of its more emotional truths more closely.

“It was always just about the man being bad at expressing his feelings. Tale as old as time,” he quipped. “But the women still marry us and they still stay with us. There had to be a reason why. So we kind of jumped into those waters a little bit. ”

Young added that the song also draws from what he described as a new chapter in his life.

“I’ve jumped really deep into health and wellness, and I’m trying to hang around longer for my family. And so it’s kind of Brett Young 2.0.”

Young noted that his children played a significant role in shaping his lifestyle shift.

“It started with alcohol. We cut that out at the beginning of last year. Mornings with babies were not feeling great, and it wasn’t serving me in my life or my career,” he continued.

Young shares two children with his wife, Taylor Mills: daughters Presley, born in 2019 and Rowan, born in 2021.

“And then I just started thinking, ‘Well, what else can we do to hang around longer for the kiddos?'” he explained. “And there’s a lot of information available to us. I went down that rabbit hole, and I’ve just been really chasing it ever since.”

The studio album “2.0” is Young’s fifth. His first release came in 2017 with the self-titled album “Brett Young.” In 2018, he followed up with his album “Ticket to L.A.” and three years later in 2021, he released “Weekends Look a Little Different These Days”. In 2023, his fourth album “Across the Sheets” included a re-recorded take on his hit “You Ain’t Here to Kiss Me.”
