Warner Bros. and DC Studios have halted production on โThe Batman Part II,โ as director Matt Reeves takes a pause to deal with personal matters.
โProduction on โThe Batman Part IIโ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,โ a rep said in a statement. โMatt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.โ
Robert Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader in the highly anticipated superhero sequel, which has already experienced several delays. โThe Batman Part IIโ was originally set to open on Oct. 2, 2026, before Warner Bros. delayed it to Oct. 1, 2027. Then, in July, the studio pushed the film to February 2028. Reevesโ first โBatmanโ was released in March 2022.
Along with Pattinson, other cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.
After the first delay, DC Studios boss James Gunn took to Threads to justify the push, writing that itโs โfairly commonโ for major blockbusters to have yearslong gaps between sequels.
โTo be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,โ Gunn wrote on Threads at the time. โ7 years between โAlienโ and โAliens.โ 14 years between โIncredibles.โ 7 years between the first two โTerminators.โ 13 years between โAvatars.โ 36 years between โTop Guns.โ And, of course, six years between โGuardians Vol 2โ and โVol 3.โโ
In a recent interview with Collider, Pattinson said โThe Batman Part IIโ is a completely โdifferent takeโ from the first film.
โItโs so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another,โ he told Collider in a recent interview. โItโs a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and Iโm excited to see how it turns out.โ
