‘Spider-Man’ Stays in Full Swing at U.K. Box Office as ‘Odyssey’ Sails


Sonyโ€™s superhero blockbuster โ€œSpider-Man: Brand New Dayโ€ held the top position at the U.K. and Ireland box office for a fifth consecutive weekend, generating ยฃ2.7 million ($3.7 million).

The film has collected $125.5 million after 27 days on release.

Universalโ€™s epic โ€œThe Odyssey,โ€ directed by Christopher Nolan, maintained second place in its seventh week on release, adding $3.2 million. The performance advanced the featureโ€™s running total to $107.6 million.

โ€œInsidious: Out of the Further,โ€ distributed by Sony, secured third place in its sophomore frame, collecting $1.8 million to lift its cume to $6.6 million. Altitudeโ€™s live-action animation hybrid โ€œCoyote vs. Acmeโ€ claimed fourth position in its second frame with $1.4 million.

Disneyโ€™s post-apocalyptic drama โ€œThe Dog Stars,โ€ starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, debuted in fifth place with an opening frame of $1.4 million. Warner Bros.โ€™ โ€œThe End of Oak Streetโ€ followed in sixth place during its third session, adding $892,214 to raise its running total to $8.1 million.

Warner Bros.โ€™ 25th anniversary re-issue of โ€œHarry Potter and the Philosopherโ€™s Stoneโ€ landed in seventh place, taking $707,194 over the frame. Paramountโ€™s โ€œPaw Patrol: The Dino Movieโ€ placed eighth in its fourth week with $687,476, moving its total to $7.3 million.

Universalโ€™s โ€œOne Night Onlyโ€ opened in ninth position with $678,910. Disney rounded out the top 10 with Pixarโ€™s โ€œToy Story 5,โ€ which collected $647,952 in its 11th week of release to advance its running total to $77.6 million.

In specialized release, Mubiโ€™s โ€œTeenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,โ€ directed by Jane Schoenbrun, delivered a resilient second weekend, generating $186,113 across the Friday-to-Sunday frame and $248,459 across the full four-day bank holiday weekend. That performance propelled the filmโ€™s cumulative gross to $981,195. The release registered a slim 39% drop, achieving the joint-best hold of any wide or saturation release from the prior session alongside โ€œInsidious: Out of the Further.โ€ Light House Cinema in Dublin ranked as the top-grossing site for the title, followed by Glasgow Film Theatre, Picturehouse Central, Rio Dalston, and Curzon Soho, with the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton registering a 3% increase over its launch weekend. The theatrical run continues with 35mm presentations at Watershed Bristol and Everymanโ€™s Screen on the Green. Beyond the U.K. and Ireland, Mubi has rolled the picture out across North America, Latin America, Italy, Germany, and Austria.

Looking ahead to the upcoming theatrical frame, mid-week event programming kicked off on Wednesday Sept. 2 with CinemaLive rolling out โ€œLa Traviata on Sydney Harbour 2021โ€ alongside concert film โ€œKaty Perry: The Lifetimes Tour โ€“ Live from Paris,โ€ followed by Dreamz Entertainmentโ€™s Telugu-language rom-com โ€œRomanchakam.โ€

Wide debuts across 300+ locations are led by True Brit Entertainmentโ€™s โ€œThe Death of Robin Hood,โ€ directed by Michael Sarnoski and starring Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgรฅrd, alongside Neonโ€™s supernatural horror โ€œLeviticus,โ€ directed by Adrian Chiarella. Specialized, international, and catalog offerings opening the same day include Kent Jonesโ€™ โ€œLate Fameโ€ via BFI Distribution across 100+ locations, Aardmanโ€™s โ€œShaun the Sheep: Farmageddon,โ€ Studiocanalโ€™s 35th anniversary reissue of โ€œTerminator 2: Judgment Day,โ€ Super Natureโ€™s โ€œThe Incomer,โ€ and limited rollouts for โ€œFall,โ€ โ€œGail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass,โ€ and 40th anniversary screenings of โ€œStar Trek IV: The Voyage Home.โ€ Lionsgate is also returning the โ€œHunger Gamesโ€ franchise to cinemas with re-releases spanning โ€œThe Hunger Games,โ€ โ€œThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire,โ€ both installments of โ€œThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay,โ€ and โ€œThe Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.โ€

The weekend concludes with Disney re-releasing โ€œCarsโ€ for its 20th anniversary on Saturday Sept. 5, before Dogwoof debuts sports documentary โ€œLomuโ€ on Sept. 7 across more than 100 locations.
