Singer Duncan Sheik Hospitalized, in ‘Critical But Stable Condition’

Duncan Sheik, the singer behind hits like the Grammy-nominated โ€œBarely Breathing,โ€ has been hospitalized and is currently receiving medical treatment, per a statement shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday.

โ€œWe would like to share an update with Duncanโ€™s fans and the public,โ€ the statement read. โ€œDuncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time.โ€

The statement concluded: โ€œWe kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support.โ€

According to Sheikโ€™s social media, he has been in and out of the hospital โ€” earlier this month, the singer shared a post with the caption โ€œSorry for the selfies. But Iโ€™m still bored in hospital.โ€ On Aug. 20, he posted a photo with the caption โ€œI would prefer to be home making music. But a bit of reflection is not too bad โ€ฆ boring hospital stays have their benefits (outside the obvious).โ€

The news comes ahead of the opening of the new musical โ€œMemoirs of Amorous Gentleman,โ€ an adaptation of Moyoco Annoโ€™s manga graphic novel, for which Sheik penned the score. The first preview is set for September 25, with the opening scheduled for October 15.

Sheik also composed the music for the Broadway show โ€œSpring Awakening,โ€ a revival of which is set to begin previews off-Broadway this fall. The show first debuted in 2006 and ran for 859 performances, featuring a cast including Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, Skylar Astin, John Gallagher Jr. and more. It won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. โ€œSpring Awakeningโ€ was last revived in 2015.
