Kiki Shepard, the co-host of the long-running variety show โShowtime at the Apollo,โ died on Monday from a heart attack. She was 74.
Shepardโs death was confirmed via her rep.
From 1987-2002, Shepard co-hosted โShowtime at the Apolloโ alongside a revolving cast of emcees, which included Steve Harvey, Sinbad, MoโNique, Rudy Rush, Mark Curry and Rick Aviles. Filmed at Harlemโs iconic Apollo Theater, the show featured live performances from both professional and up-and-coming musical acts. โShowtime at the Apolloโ would also platform complete unknowns, who would take the stage for their shot at a big break. During her time as host, Shepard was known as the โApollo Queen of Fashion.โ
Throughout her time on โShowtime at the Apollo,โ Shepard also had recurring roles in shows like โA Different Worldโ and โBaywatch.โ Her other TV credits include โLady Boss,โ โThunder in Paradise,โ โBaywatch Nights,โ โNYPD Blueโ and โFamily Law.โ Her more recent TV roles were on shows like โHighly Favored,โ โMind Your Businessโ and โGreyโs Anatomy.โ
Her film credits include โA Rage in Harlem,โ โMiss Eversโ Boys,โ โDolls of Voodooโ and โBlackjack Christmas.โ
Throughout the late โ70s and early โ80s, Shepard was in the ensemble cast of several Broadway productions, including โBubbling Brown Sugar,โ โCominโ Uptown,โ โReggae,โ โYour Arms Too Short to Box With Godโ and โPorgy and Bess.โ
Born in Tyler, Texas, in July of 1951, Shepard attended Emmett Scott High School and later attended Howard University. During her time at Howard, she became a charter member of the D. C. Repertory Dance Company. In 1976, she performed at New Yorkโs Delacourt Summer Shakesperian Festival.
