Shirley MacLaine has made a rare video appearance at the age of 92, and sheโs not shy to throw some quips at โSweet Charityโsโ expense.
โI would like to see โSweet Charityโ again. Now, while youโre watching it, remember how hard we worked,โ MacLaine said in a video posted by the Southampton Playhouse ahead of the theaterโs upcoming screening of Bob Fosseโs musical film. โAnd between you and me, it didnโt do very well.โ
MacLaine starred in Bob Fosseโs โSweet Charity,โ which released in 1969 and was a box office flop; nevertheless, Fosse found commercial success later in his career with โCabaretโ and โAll That Jazz.โ In Fosseโs directorial debut, MacLaine was joined in the cast by Sammy Davis Jr., Chita Rivera, John McMartin, Paula Kelly and Ricardo Montalban.
In December 2025, MacLaine received a lifetime achievement award at the first-ever Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The award was also named in MacLaineโs honor.
โGetting an award for dancing is the most important acknowledgment I could have,โ she said while accepting her award. โMy mother took me to dancing class when I was three because I had weak ankles and I fell in love with it.โ
MacLaine won the best actress Oscar in 1984 for her work in โTerms of Endearment.โ Her previous Oscar nominations were for โThe Turning Point,โ โThe Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir,โ โIrma la Douce,โ โThe Apartmentโ and โSome Came Running.โ Her last on-screen appearance was in the 2022 film โAmerican Dreamerโ and two episodes of โOnly Murders in the Building.โ In November 2025, Variety exclusively announced that MacLaine and Ansel Elgort would be starring in a road trip comedy titled โLucy Boomer.โ
