Martha Plimpton has joined the list of stars speaking out over Shane Gillisโ poorly received โSaturday Night Liveโ opening monologue.
โThereโs this Shane Gillis guy who Iโve never heard of who said some really fucking stupid shit on live on air on โSNLโ on Saturday,โ the โGooniesโ star said in a video posted to her Instagram. โItโs like really stupid shit. He deserves a spanking from his mom.โ
Plimpton also spoke about watching a documentary about Lore Michaels, who created and executive produced the sketch comedy show. โThere was one scene that took place in Lorneโs office where in between the rehearsal taping and the live show, a bunch of people gather in Lorneโs office to decide whatโs gonna get cut and whatโs gonna make it to air. It was all white men in the room deciding. All white men. And maybe even all straight white men,โ she said. โI think Lorne needs some more women in that room making decisions. Donโt you? Yeah, I think so.โ She continued to shout out her love of โSNLโ mainstay Kenan Thompson, who commented on the video. โShane Who?โ her caption read.
Gillis sparked outrage over his misogynistic opening monologue nearly immediately after he took the stage on Saturday night. The bulk of the criticism heโs faced is the result of a joke about womenโs workout clothes. โI havenโt been to the gym in so long, I didnโt know women just dress like whores now?โ he said. โLook, Iโm sorry, thereโs no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? Iโve seen it. Youโve seen the shorts? Theyโre those neon, like, artificial bait-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And donโt look! Youโre not allowed to look.โ
Dan Levy shared an Instagram Reel on Sunday reacting to the monologue in disbelief. โWomen wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists,โ he said. โThereโs a difference there. By the way, Iโve seen more menโs nipples at the gym than Iโve ever seen women showing their bodies off.โ
