Ridley Scott recently told The Times of London that he sees himself not as a โfilmmaker,โ but as an โinfluencer.โ
โEvery time, you are vulnerable,โ Scott said when asked to identify a through line in his work. โAlso, I never want to repeat myself and all my films have been on the money. Iโve been ahead of the game frequently and, if youโre ahead of the game, youโre an influencer. So Iโm not a filmmaker, Iโm an influencer.โ
Scott, a three-time Oscar-nominated director, has certainly flexed his influence throughout his years in Hollywood with immortal classics like โBlade Runner,โ โAlien,โ โThelma & Louise,โ and โGladiator.โ Earlier in the sit-down, he noted there are things he has yet to cross off his career checklist.
โIโve never done a Western,โ he said. โI have cast Hugh Jackman for my โTreasure Islandโ adaptation. I want to do a musical and, also, have a marvelous film about the African elephant.โ
Scottโs next film is โThe Dog Starsโ with Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin. He deemed his leading man Elordi โa big starโ and said they โgot on great.โ He went on to imply that the reason he directed โThe Dog Starsโ was because he sensed tedious sameness in the type of stories coming out of Hollywood.
โLook, everything now is about a murdered girl in the woods, or an FBI agent who is better than anyone else โ or a superhero,โ Scott said. โFuck me! There have to be other stories to tell.โ
Scott will soon receive an honorary Oscar at Novemberโs Governors Awards. Other recipients include Glenn Close and Disneyโs first Black animator, Floyd Norman.
