Rodrigo previously scored No. 1s with her debut album โSourโ in 2021 and its follow-up โGutsโ in 2023. โSourโ entered the chart with 295,000 equivalent album units, while โGutsโ amassed 302,000 equivalent album units two years later.
In the run-up to the release of โYou Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,โ Rodrigo released the chart-topping โDrop Deadโ and a second single โThe Cure,โ which peaked at No. 5. She is currently ramping up to her massive international โUnraveledโ tour, which kicks off in Hartford, CT on September 25 and makes its way through North America before picking back up in Europe in 2027.
Varietyโs Chris Willman praised โYou Seem Pretty Sadโ for Rodrigoโs storytelling and sincerity: โHer ability to explore the full arc of a relationship this well โ complete with a bit of foreshadowing in the more cheerful numbers โ is still more proof of what a serious talent she is, above and beyond her angelic vocal stacking and perfectly pretty snarl.โ
โYou Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Loveโ is the only album to debut in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week. It unseats Drakeโs โIcemanโ from the top spot after four weeks, pushing it back to No. 2.
