MoreThan Films has sold North American digital rights to Ion de Sosaโs โBalearicโ to Cineverse, which will release the film on its curated arthouse streaming platform Fandor, marking a key deal for one of the companyโs Cannes Marchรฉ du Film titles.
The Barcelona-Berlin-Sรฃo Paulo sales agency has also closed all-rights deals on Sophy Romvariโs โBlue Heronโ with King Records for Japan and BKS Cinema for Finland, extending the filmโs international rollout as it continues its U.S. theatrical release through Janus Films.
The deals put fresh momentum behind two 2025 Locarno Cineasti del Presente titles handled by MoreThan Films: De Sosaโs Spanish-French โBalearicโ and Romvariโs debut feature โBlue Heron.โ
โWe couldnโt think of a better place than Fandor for โBalearicโsโ North American digital release,โ said Queralt Pons Serra, managing partner at MoreThan Films.
โWe believe that the film fits perfectly into their curatorial line-up that the programming team selects with great care. We are excited for U.S. and Canadian audiences to discover Ion de Sosaโs unique work.โ
Eric Rowe, head of programming at Cineverse, described โBalearicโ as โa daring, genre-defying film that feels both wholly original and uncannily timely.โ
โBeneath its hypnotic surface, De Sosa taps into the unease and contradictions of the present moment in ways we believe will deeply resonate with Fandor audiences and anyone drawn to bold, original cinema,โ Rowe added.
Produced by Spainโs Umbracle Cine, Jaibo Films and Apellaniz & de Sosa with Franceโs La Fabrica Nocturna Cinรฉma, โBalearicโ follows a group of young people trapped in the swimming pool of a luxury house by three ferocious dogs. Nearby, neighbors gather at a villa to celebrate the beginning of summer. The night is St. Johnโs Eve, a time traditionally associated with magic.
MoreThan Films is presenting โBalearicโ at Cannes as one of its priority Spanish titles, describing it as โa political and aesthetic statementโ with an unsettling perspective, sharp humour and a hard-to-categorize sensibility.
The film is written by De Sosa, Chema Garcรญa Ibarra, Juan Gonzรกlez, Juliรกn Gรฉnisson and Lorena Iglesias and its cast includes Luka Pรฉros, Christina Rosenvinge and Marรญa Llopis. The project received support from ICAA, ECAM Forum and EWIP Cologne.

โBlue Heronโ is already in theatrical release in North America, with Janus Films expanding the film into more than 90 U.S. theaters in its third week, according to MoreThan Films. Its Canadian release began May 1, ahead of forthcoming launches in Japan and Finland.
โWeโre very excited to announce distribution partners for the film in such diverse territories as Finland and Japan,โ said Lidia Damatto, managing partner at MoreThan Films, adding that the film is โin the right handsโ with BKS Cinema and King Records, respectively.
Daniel Sundvik, CEO of BKS Cinema, called โBlue Heronโ โa film full of both tactile sensitivity and bold, risk-taking creativity.โ
โWe believe that Sophy Romvari has the makings of a modern master, and it is a huge honour to bring her debut feature to Finnish audiences,โ Sundvik said.
Romvariโs feature follows eight-year-old Sasha and her Hungarian immigrant family after they relocate to Vancouver Island in the late 1990s, where their new start is disrupted by the increasingly dangerous behavior of Sashaโs eldest brother, Jeremy.
During Cannes, MoreThan Films is also highlighting Gabriel Azorรญnโs โLast Night I Conquered the City of Thebesโ (โAnoche conquistรฉ Tebasโ), a Spain-Portugal production from DVEIN Films, Filmika Galaika and Bando ร Parte.
Written by Azorรญn and Celso Gimรฉnez, the film follows Antรณnio and Jota as they visit resurfaced Roman thermal baths in Galicia, where the waters stir confessions around fear, intimacy and male friendship.
