Billie Eilishโs anti-ICE Grammys speech has set off a firestorm of controversy over the past few days as social media users weigh in on her comments. The latest salvo comes from Mark Ruffalo, who told โMarty Supremeโ star and โShark Tankโ host Kevin OโLeary on Threads โWhy donโt you STFU.โ
โItโs hilarious,โ Ruffaloโs post continued. โYou will go on any show and talk shit about any number of things and smugly expect us to listen to you, but you will dig into a real artist that dwarfs anything you dream of doing for actually saying something that resonates with 100โs of millions of people the world over. Itโs astounding the fantasy double standard Kevin OโLeary lives in. You played yourself well in Marty Supreme.โ
In โMarty Supreme,โ OโLeary plays a ruthless businessman who finances Marty Mauserโs ping pong career while humiliating him in grotesque ways.
Ruffalo was responding to OโLearyโs recent criticism of Eilishโs Grammys speech on Fox News. โItโs the first lesson 101 for celebrity: as you rise up, whether youโre a film star or music star or whatever, shut your mouth, and just entertain,โ OโLeary said.
At Sundayโs Grammy awards, Eilish accepted her Grammy for song of the year with a speech that has riled up conservatives. โAs grateful as I feel, I honestly donโt feel like I need to say anything but that no one is illegal on stolen land,โ she said. โItโs just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now, and I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter, and fuck ICE.โ
On Wednesday, her brother Finneas came to her defense, saying on Threads, โSeeing a lot of very powerful old white men outraged about what my 24-year-old sister said during her acceptance speech.โ
