Jon Stewart Slams Republicans for Minneapolis ICE Shooting Reaction

On this weekโ€™s episode of โ€œThe Daily Show,โ€ Jon Stewart attacked Republicans for deflecting blame from federal agents for the shooting of a 37-year-old man in Minneapolis on Saturday.

At the top of Mondayโ€™s show, Stewart played clips of the United States Secretary of Homeland Security,
Kristi Noem, at a press conference shortly after the shooting. She claimed the victim, Alex Pretti, โ€œcame with weapons and ammunition to stop a law enforcement operationโ€ and โ€œattackedโ€ federal agents.

โ€œThose are the facts,โ€ Stewart said. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s really no reason to doubt them, no evidence exists to contradict theirโ€“hold on. Iโ€™m getting aโ€ฆ. really? Iโ€™m hearing there may be some grainy Zapruder footage from every angle imaginable that contradicts the governmentโ€™s version of events!โ€

The show then cut to news clips covering civilian footage of the shooting. CNN reported that all Pretti had in his hand was โ€œa cell phone, not a gun.โ€ The outlet also reported that Pretti was โ€œtrying to help a womanโ€ whoโ€™d been โ€œpushed to the ground and pepper-sprayedโ€ by ICE agents moments before he was killed. In a clip from NBC News, a reporter claims that one video appears to โ€œshow Prettiโ€™s legal, registered firearm being removed from his person by an officer just seconds before those shots were fired.โ€

โ€œWell, looks like weโ€™ve got a real case of: โ€˜He-said, video-totally-disproves-what-he- said,โ€™โ€ Stewart joked.

Later in the show, Stewart played a clip from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blancheโ€™s appearance on โ€œMeet the Press.โ€ He said during his interview that Pretti โ€œwas not protesting peacefully,โ€ adding, โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t gaslight the administration about what happened.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re gaslighting you?โ€ Stewart exclaimed. โ€œSpeaking of gaslighting, here is Todd Blanche, a day after accusing all of us of gaslighting the administration about what happened.โ€

The late-night pundit then cut to Fox News, where Blanche claimed, โ€œI donโ€™t think anybody thinks that they were comparing what happened on Saturday to the legal definition of domestic terrorism.โ€

โ€œWell, I mean, they were certainly insinuating it,โ€ Stewart said. โ€œI mean, it might be hard to find someone explicitly using those exact words, but โ€” we found โ€™em.โ€

Stewart then cut back to Noemโ€™s press conference, where she said, โ€œViolence against a government because of ideological reasons and for reasons to resist and perpetuate violence, that is the definition of domestic terrorism.โ€

Stewart joked, โ€œI think that actually might be the definition of gaslighting.โ€
