James Cameron revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he will hold a press conference to reveal the plot details of โAvatar 4โณ and โAvatar 5โ if the franchise ends after โAvatar: Fire and Ash,โ the third movie in the franchise that is currently playing in theaters. The Oscar-winning director has been vocal on the โFire and Ashโ press tour that the future of the โAvatarโ franchise depends on the third movie being a financial success. Cameron is prepared to end the series if itโs not.
โI donโt know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,โ Cameron told EW. โBut, you know, we prove that business case every time we go outโฆ If we donโt get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, Iโll hold a press conference and Iโll tell you what we were gonna do. Howโs that?โ
Cameron said his other option is to novelize his scripts for โAvatar 4โ and โAvatar 5,โ adding: โThereโs so much culture and backstory and lateral detail in these characters thatโs been worked out. Iโd love to do something thatโs at that level of granular detail.โ
During an interview with Variety, Cameron said โweโre getting ahead of ourselvesโ when asked about โAvatar 4โ because โweโve got to make some money with this one. Every time we go out, we have to prove this crazy business case yet again. The world has changed. We all know the stats, where theatrical is. Itโs been a bad year. Itโs starting to perk up a little bit with a couple of recent releases: โWicked: For Goodโ has done well, and โZootopia 2โ is doing well. So, weโll see.โ
It appears Cameron might not need to hold a press tour to reveal the final two โAvatarโ movies because โFire and Ashโ is performing quite well at the box office. The movie crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office after one week in theaters and is expected to have strong holds into the new year. The previous two โAvatarโ movies both cleared the $2 billion mark worldwide.
Jon Landau, the franchiseโs late producer,ย let it slip to Gizmodoย in 2022 that โAvatar 5โ brings the Naโvi characters to Earth, adding: โAnd we go to it to open peopleโs eyes, open Neytiriโs eyes, to what exists on Earth.โ
Cameron has left it up in the air whether or not he will direct the next two โAvatarโ movies himself. He told Empireย in 2022 that helming the franchise is โall-consumingโ and he might want to โpass the batonโ to another director starting with โAvatar 4.โย But he recently said before โFire and Ashโsโ release that โthereโs no reason not toโ direct the next sequel himself.
โIโm healthy, Iโm good to go. Iโm not going to rule it out,โ Cameron added. โI mean, Iโve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do thatโฆ [but] if I can, Iโll just do it.โ
