Henry Winkler Refused to Let ABC Boss Change ‘Happy Days’ Title

Henry Winkler opened up on the latest episode of โ€œIn Depth With Graham Bensingerโ€ about refusing to let ABC executives change the name of โ€œHappy Daysโ€ to โ€œFonzieโ€™s Happy Daysโ€ due to the explosive popularity of his character. Winkler starred as Arthur โ€œFonzieโ€ Fonzarelli on all 11 seasons and 255 episodes of the iconic ABC sitcom. He debuted as a recurring role before being upped to a series regular during the showโ€™s second season because of how beloved the Fonz became with fans.

โ€œBefore โ€˜Happy Daysโ€™, ABC was in the basement. It was the last of the three networks,โ€ Winkler said. โ€œAnd [ABC president Leonard Goldenson] came to my office, my dressing room, and he said, โ€˜First of all, I would like to call the show โ€œFonzieโ€™s Happy Days.โ€ Weโ€™re thinking of changing the title.โ€™ And I said, โ€˜Sir, Iโ€™m really asking you not to do thatโ€™โ€ฆ We were really soaring in the in the ratings. It wasnโ€™t broken. This would be a slap in the face. Why change the title if it is working so magnificently?โ€

Winkler was also concerned about keeping tensions among the ensemble cast at bay. According to the actor, Ron Howard was already annoyed with Fonz becoming the showโ€™s breakout character and felt he was being โ€œovershadowedโ€ by him. Howard played the showโ€™s original lead character Richie Cunningham, leaving โ€œHappy Daysโ€ after seven seasons.

โ€œ[Ron] said, โ€˜Look, it hurt my feelings. Youโ€™re not doing anything to hurt my feelings. Youโ€™re really good and youโ€™re good for the show. Itโ€™s helping the show. So I put all of that together and thatโ€™s the way it is.โ€™ And we never talked about it again,โ€ Winkler said of Howardโ€™s annoyances.

Regardless, Winkler wanted to keep the peace among the cast and turned down the title change because โ€œwe canโ€™t do [the show] if we are resentful or angry of each other.โ€ The actor also turned down Goldensonโ€™s offer to spin off Fonz into his own series because โ€œI have no idea if Iโ€™d have a chemistry with new people.โ€ Winkler told the ABC boss: โ€œI donโ€™t think I can do my own show. I think Iโ€™m very happy right where I am with this extraordinary family.โ€

Howard revealed in a career-spanning Vulture interview last year that while he grew comfortable over time with Winklerโ€™s Fonz becoming the star of โ€œHappy Days,โ€ he drew a line at having the show be retitled. Howard even threatened to leave the show if they changed the title.

โ€œI never, ever challenged what they were doing creatively. It made perfect sense that youโ€™d build this Fonzie character and maximize that,โ€ Howard said. โ€œBut the optics of now being in a show called โ€˜Fonzieโ€™s Happy Days,โ€™ my ego wouldnโ€™t allow for that. I wasnโ€™t bluffing. I wouldโ€™ve left. And my contract, Iโ€™m sure, had no clause connected to titles. They could have said, โ€˜Fuck you. We changed the title, and we expect you to show up Monday morning.โ€™ But thank God for great bosses. Garry Marshall said, โ€˜If youโ€™re not cool with it โ€ฆโ€™โ€

โ€œI later found out Henry himself thought it was a terrible idea,โ€ Howard continued. โ€œI think the position I took made it easy for both Garry and Henry to also say, โ€˜No, letโ€™s not do that.โ€™ Years later, Henry said they were ready to do a spinoff and other things for Fonzie and he just said, โ€˜Why fix it if itโ€™s not broken? My success depends on the ensemble Iโ€™m in.โ€™โ€
