Another Colleen Hoover adaptation is coming to theaters as Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson bring the authorโs best-selling novel โVerityโ to life this weekend.
The Amazon MGM thriller has made $4.5 million in preview at the box office. Itโs on track to debut with $30 million to $35 million and land in the top spot on the charts, which would mark Hathawayโs third No. 1 movie after โThe Odysseyโ and โThe Devil Wears Prada 2.โ
Produced for $40 million, โVerityโ should be another hit in the recent string of adaptations of Hooverโs novels, which include 2024โs โIt Ends With Us,โ 2025โs โRegretting Youโ and โReminders of Himโ from earlier this year. โIt Ends With Us,โ starring Blake Lively, is the biggest of the group with its $50 million opening and $350 million global haul. โVerityโ should fall in second place and surpass โReminders of Him,โ which opened with $17 million, and โRegretting You,โ which had $13.6 million.
Hathaway stars as the reclusive author Verity Crawford in the movie, whoโs unable to finish her latest novel after an accident. She and her husband, played by Josh Hartnett, hire Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) to finish Verityโs manuscript, but she gets tangled into a web of mystery and lies.
โVerityโ should have no trouble dominating over this weekendโs fellow new release, Tom Cruiseโs โDigger.โ Directed by Alejandro Gonzรกlez Iรฑรกrritu, โDiggerโ is expected to be one of this yearโs biggest box office bombs. Itโs made $1.2 million in previews and is projected to open with just $12 million to $15 million against a staggering $125 million budget (though it reportedly grew to over $160 million). Cruise stars as an oil tycoon who must save the planet from a climate catastrophe in this environmental thriller. Reviews havenโt been kind to the film, but Cruise and the โDiggerโ team have leaned into the bad press and asked viewers to see the movie for themselves.
