Anne Hathaway Says Movies With Dog Deaths ‘Should Be Rated R’

Anne Hathaway told Complex during her press tour for โ€œThe End of Oak Streetโ€ that movies should be rated R if they feature dogs being killed. Moviegoers have wondered if โ€œOak Streetโ€ would feature dog violence ever since the filmโ€™s trailer revealed Starbuck, the trusted canine of the filmโ€™s central family (Hathaway plays matriarch Denise).

โ€œI feel like movies that kill dogs should automatically be rated R,โ€ Hathaway said. โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter if anybody curses, doesnโ€™t matter if thereโ€™s violence, if a dog dies, R-ratedโ€ฆ I think everybodyโ€™s so traumatized byย โ€˜John Wick,โ€™ because Iโ€™ve been seeing those [comments for our movie] like, โ€˜They better not kill the dog.โ€™ Iโ€™m like, โ€˜Which movies are out there killing dogs that everybodyโ€™s scared that weโ€™re just casually doing it in movies now?โ€™โ€

โ€œSomebody was like, can you just let the audiences know that, like, itโ€™s all gonna be OK?โ€™โ€ Hathaway added about Starbuckโ€™s fate in her new movie. โ€œWe break rules in this movie, that might not be one of them. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

Hathaway headlines โ€œEnd of Oak Streetโ€ alongside Ewan McGregor. The duo star as parents who must protect their family from dinosaurs when their suburban street travels back in time millions of years. โ€œIt Followsโ€ and โ€œUnder the Silver Lakeโ€ director David Robert Mitchell helmed the Warner Bros. tentpole, with J.J. Abrams on board as producer.

โ€œThe End of Oak Streetโ€ is now playing in theaters nationwide.
