Shane Gillis โ€˜Deserves a Spankingโ€™ for โ€˜SNL,โ€™ Says Martha Plimpton

Martha Plimpton has joined the list of stars speaking out over Shane Gillisโ€™ poorly received โ€œSaturday Night Liveโ€ opening monologue.

โ€œThereโ€™s this Shane Gillis guy who Iโ€™ve never heard of who said some really fucking stupid shit on live on air on โ€˜SNLโ€™ on Saturday,โ€ the โ€œGooniesโ€ star said in a video posted to her Instagram. โ€œItโ€™s like really stupid shit. He deserves a spanking from his mom.โ€

Plimpton also spoke about watching a documentary about Lore Michaels, who created and executive produced the sketch comedy show. โ€œThere was one scene that took place in Lorneโ€™s office where in between the rehearsal taping and the live show, a bunch of people gather in Lorneโ€™s office to decide whatโ€™s gonna get cut and whatโ€™s gonna make it to air. It was all white men in the room deciding. All white men. And maybe even all straight white men,โ€ she said. โ€œI think Lorne needs some more women in that room making decisions. Donโ€™t you? Yeah, I think so.โ€ She continued to shout out her love of โ€˜SNLโ€™ mainstay Kenan Thompson, who commented on the video. โ€œShane Who?โ€ her caption read.

Gillis sparked outrage over his misogynistic opening monologue nearly immediately after he took the stage on Saturday night. The bulk of the criticism heโ€™s faced is the result of a joke about womenโ€™s workout clothes. โ€œI havenโ€™t been to the gym in so long, I didnโ€™t know women just dress like whores now?โ€ he said. โ€œLook, Iโ€™m sorry, thereโ€™s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? Iโ€™ve seen it. Youโ€™ve seen the shorts? Theyโ€™re those neon, like, artificial bait-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And donโ€™t look! Youโ€™re not allowed to look.โ€

Dan Levy shared an Instagram Reel on Sunday reacting to the monologue in disbelief. โ€œWomen wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists,โ€ he said. โ€œThereโ€™s a difference there. By the way, Iโ€™ve seen more menโ€™s nipples at the gym than Iโ€™ve ever seen women showing their bodies off.โ€
