Disney Hires First CTO: Karandeep Anand, Former CEO of Character.AI

Disney chief Josh Dโ€™Amaro, in a move that shows heโ€™s trying to position the Mouse House as a tech-forward entertainment company, has tapped veteran technology executive Karandeep Anand as its first chief technology officer.

Most recently, Anand was CEO of Character.AI, a generative AI chatbot company. About a year ago, Disney accused Character.AI of โ€œblatantly infringingโ€ its copyrights and sent the tech startup a cease-and-desist letter demanding it remove Disney characters from its platform. Character.AI complied with the request.

No hard feelings, apparently: Disney announced that Anand will join the company as senior executive vice president and chief technology officer, a newly created position, effective Oct. 2. He will report directly to Dโ€™Amaro, who took over as CEO of Disney in March. In addition to Anandโ€™s appointment, โ€œa number of Character.AIโ€™s technical teamโ€ are expected to join Disney, the company said.

Prior to Character.AI, Anand served president and chief product officer of financial technology company Brex. He also held several leadership roles at Metaโ€™s Facebook, most recently as VP of ads and business products. Earlier in his career, Anand had senior product and engineering leadership roles at Microsoft, where he worked for 15 years and was part of the team that built the Azure cloud-computing platform.

โ€œKarandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI, and will be a vital addition to Disneyโ€™s senior leadership team as we further our three priorities: great storytelling as our North Star, technology in service of creativity, and operating as One Disney,โ€ Dโ€™Amaro said in a statement. โ€œHe is an expert builder and strategist, technical and product-minded, with sharp instincts for what fans actually want.โ€

Dโ€™Amaro added, โ€œHe also has real enthusiasm and respect for Disney, a clear sense of where technology and creativity meet, and shares our belief that technology creates the most value when it helps people do their best work.โ€

As CTO, Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product and engineering. He will work across the technology teams in Disneyโ€™s segments to โ€œfurther modernizeโ€ how the company builds and delivers technology company-wide.

Disney has not had a CTO per se, until now. Its highest-ranking tech executive previously was Adam Smith, who on Thursday Disney promoted to chairman of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment. In 2024 Disney hired Smith, former VP of product management at YouTube, as chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN. He subsequently also served as co-president of DTC alongside Joe Earley, who is now in the newly created role of president of Disney Entertainment Television franchise and content strategy.

According to Disney, the hiring of Anand illustrates that Dโ€™Amaro is sharpening the companyโ€™s focus on technology as a growth driver. Since becoming CEO, Dโ€™Amaro has emphasized the need to strengthen Disneyโ€™s direct relationships with fans by creating a more connected Disney experience, with Disney+ as the digital centerpiece. Anand is well-suited to help achieve that goal, according to Disney, as he brings experience spanning consumer technology, infrastructure, product development and AI.

Anand said in a statement, โ€œIโ€™ve admired Disney my entire life for how it blends unforgettable storytelling with the latest technology to constantly push the boundaries of what entertainment can be. Iโ€™m honored to join a team with such extraordinary creative talent, and I look forward to building on the companyโ€™s impressive technology capabilities to help Disney connect fans worldwide with its beloved stories and characters in new and innovative ways.โ€

Anand holds a computer science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. He also has a marketing and strategy certification from Northwestern Universityโ€™s Kellogg School of Management.
