Sisters Rooney and Kate Mara learned to speak in unison for Werner Herzogโs drama โBucking Fastard,โ something that came โsurprisinglyโ easily for them.
The film follows two sisters who are so close they โspeak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams,โ according to the synopsis. Herzog, the influential German filmmaker of โNosferatu the Vampyreโ and โAguirre, Wrath of God,โ said at a Venice Film Festival press conference ahead of its premiere on Thursday that heโs been wanting to make the movie for years, but it was only โclear that it could be doneโ once he met the Mara sisters.
โAt first, it was very daunting, the idea that we were going to be playing this kind of same person,โ Rooney said. โBut I think we found pretty quickly that having a lifetime together and all this history and a childhood of playing together โฆ. there was just an unspoken world between us that we didnโt have to work very hard to create at all. Iโve never laughed so much, it was a very once in a lifetime, unique experience.โ
Kate added that speaking in unison โfelt almost like a song, like we had this unspoken sort of rhythm together.โ She continued: โIt was very musical, I think. It just sort of happened quite naturally. Surprisingly, it came with a lot more ease than we were expecting.โ
Herzog said that the sisters โhardly needed any rehearsalsโ to get the speaking right. Though they had time for two weeks of preparation, Herzog stopped it after just five days. โI had complete confidence with them,โ he said.
โBucking Fastardโ is loosely inspired by real British identical twins Freda and Greta Chaplin, who became tabloid sensations after becoming besotted with their neighbor, who eventually took out a restraining order on them. The movieโs daring title comes from a spoonerism the twins made (simultaneously, of course) while they were in court. Orlando Bloomย andย Domhnall Gleeson round out the cast.
The film also marks the first time the Mara sisters are sharing the screen. Rooney Mara is best known for โThe Social Network,โ โThe Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,โ โHerโ and โCarol.โ Kate Maraโs major credits include โHouse of Cards,โ โ24โ and โAmerican Horror Story: Murder House.โ
Herzog has a long history at Venice, having premiered 1991โs โScream of Stoneโ and 2005โs โThe Wild Blue Yonderโ 2009โs black comedy โBad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleansโ and crime drama โMy Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?โ at past editions.
The director concluded the press conference on a reflective note after being asked about the filmโs dedication to his late friend and fellow auteur David Lynch.
โI wish he could be in my first audience,โ Herzog said. โNow, since heโs not with us anymore, I wish I could turn the wheel of time back and invite him tonight.โ
