Shirley MacLaine Has Video Appearance at 92, Teases Sweet Charity Flop

Shirley MacLaine has made a rare video appearance at the age of 92, and sheโ€™s not shy to throw some quips at โ€œSweet Charityโ€˜sโ€ expense.

โ€œI would like to see โ€˜Sweet Charityโ€™ again. Now, while youโ€™re watching it, remember how hard we worked,โ€ MacLaine said in a video posted by the Southampton Playhouse ahead of the theaterโ€™s upcoming screening of Bob Fosseโ€™s musical film. โ€œAnd between you and me, it didnโ€™t do very well.โ€

MacLaine starred in Bob Fosseโ€™s โ€œSweet Charity,โ€ which released in 1969 and was a box office flop; nevertheless, Fosse found commercial success later in his career with โ€œCabaretโ€ and โ€œAll That Jazz.โ€ In Fosseโ€™s directorial debut, MacLaine was joined in the cast by Sammy Davis Jr., Chita Rivera, John McMartin, Paula Kelly and Ricardo Montalban.

In December 2025, MacLaine received a lifetime achievement award at the first-ever Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The award was also named in MacLaineโ€™s honor.

โ€œGetting an award for dancing is the most important acknowledgment I could have,โ€ she said while accepting her award. โ€œMy mother took me to dancing class when I was three because I had weak ankles and I fell in love with it.โ€

MacLaine won the best actress Oscar in 1984 for her work in โ€œTerms of Endearment.โ€ Her previous Oscar nominations were for โ€œThe Turning Point,โ€ โ€œThe Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir,โ€ โ€œIrma la Douce,โ€ โ€œThe Apartmentโ€ and โ€œSome Came Running.โ€ Her last on-screen appearance was in the 2022 film โ€œAmerican Dreamerโ€ and two episodes of โ€œOnly Murders in the Building.โ€ In November 2025, Variety exclusively announced that MacLaine and Ansel Elgort would be starring in a road trip comedy titled โ€œLucy Boomer.โ€
