‘Showtime at the Apollo’ Co-Host Was 74


Kiki Shepard, the co-host of the long-running variety show โ€œShowtime at the Apollo,โ€ died on Monday from a heart attack. She was 74.

Shepardโ€™s death was confirmed via her rep.

From 1987-2002, Shepard co-hosted โ€œShowtime at the Apolloโ€ alongside a revolving cast of emcees, which included Steve Harvey, Sinbad, Moโ€™Nique, Rudy Rush, Mark Curry and Rick Aviles. Filmed at Harlemโ€™s iconic Apollo Theater, the show featured live performances from both professional and up-and-coming musical acts. โ€œShowtime at the Apolloโ€ would also platform complete unknowns, who would take the stage for their shot at a big break. During her time as host, Shepard was known as the โ€œApollo Queen of Fashion.โ€

Throughout her time on โ€œShowtime at the Apollo,โ€ Shepard also had recurring roles in shows like โ€œA Different Worldโ€ and โ€œBaywatch.โ€ Her other TV credits include โ€œLady Boss,โ€ โ€œThunder in Paradise,โ€ โ€œBaywatch Nights,โ€ โ€œNYPD Blueโ€ and โ€œFamily Law.โ€ Her more recent TV roles were on shows like โ€œHighly Favored,โ€ โ€œMind Your Businessโ€ and โ€œGreyโ€™s Anatomy.โ€

Her film credits include โ€œA Rage in Harlem,โ€ โ€œMiss Eversโ€™ Boys,โ€ โ€œDolls of Voodooโ€ and โ€œBlackjack Christmas.โ€

Throughout the late โ€˜70s and early โ€˜80s, Shepard was in the ensemble cast of several Broadway productions, including โ€œBubbling Brown Sugar,โ€ โ€œCominโ€™ Uptown,โ€ โ€œReggae,โ€ โ€œYour Arms Too Short to Box With Godโ€ and โ€œPorgy and Bess.โ€

Born in Tyler, Texas, in July of 1951, Shepard attended Emmett Scott High School and later attended Howard University. During her time at Howard, she became a charter member of the D. C. Repertory Dance Company. In 1976, she performed at New Yorkโ€™s Delacourt Summer Shakesperian Festival.
