Kerry Washington Is ‘Obsessed’ WIth ‘Heated Rivalry’

Kerry Washington is going all in as a โ€œHeated Rivalryโ€ fan.

โ€œI just bought one of those candles on Instagram โ€” an โ€˜Iโ€™m coming to the cottageโ€™ candle,โ€ she told me Tuesday at the premiere of her new Apple TV series โ€œImperfect Womenโ€ at the Academy Museum. โ€œIโ€™m obsessed.โ€

The nine-time Emmy nominee (she won in 2020 as a producer of Live In Front Of A Studio Audience: โ€œAll In The Familyโ€ And โ€œGood Timesโ€) went so far as to call the queer hockey drama series โ€œsome of the greatest television in the most recent decades.โ€

Believe it or not, but I did not bring up the show to Washington. Earlier on the carpet, her husband, former NFL star and now actor and producer Nnamdi Asomugha, told me she was a big fan. โ€œWhatโ€™s not to love about the show,โ€ Washington said. โ€œItโ€™s a show about belonging. Itโ€™s a show about acceptance. Itโ€™s a show about finding love, accepting love and having the courage to love. Itโ€™s also vey spicy.โ€

She recalled watching Scott Hunter (Franรงois Arnaud) and Kip Gradyโ€™s (Robbie G.K.) romance play out in Episode 3. โ€œThere are so many shows that try to do that kind of flashback bottle episode, but I was like, โ€˜All of you go home and watch this. This is great television,โ€™โ€ Washington said. โ€œAt the end, I was literally screaming at the television.โ€

I suggested a football version of โ€œHeated Rivalryโ€ to Asomugha. โ€œOh, my goodness,โ€ he said. โ€œThat would beโ€ฆwow. I didnโ€™t even think of that. Thatโ€™s interesting. Wow.โ€

Asomugha didnโ€™t realize that โ€œHeated Rivalryโ€ has inspired some queer athletes to come out publicly. โ€œThat is what art is meant to do,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s meant to empower you so thatโ€™s great.โ€

Season 2 of โ€œHeated Rivalryโ€ was announced soon after the series premiered on HBO Max and Canadian streamer Crave in November with Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie reprising their starring roles as Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. Filming is expected to begin this summer, according to series creator Jacob Tierney.

โ€œImperfect Womenโ€ stars Washington, Elizabeth Moss and Kate Mara as three best friends whose lives are upended after a horrific tragedy. โ€œThese girls are messy,โ€ Washington said. โ€œTheyโ€™re making mistakes and theyโ€™re trying to figure out how to be honest.โ€

The first two episodes of the series premiere on Apple TV on March 18.

โ€œOne of the things Iโ€™m most proud of in this show is that we cover a lot of ground thematically, but also tonally,โ€ Washington said. โ€œThere are light moments, moments of humor, thereโ€™s a lot of thriller, danger murder mystery stuff. Thereโ€™s a lot of romance and familial love.โ€
