John F. Kennedy Jr.’s Plane Crash and Death โ€” Details of the Tragedy

John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a 1999 plane crash near Marthaโ€™s Vineyard that also claimed the life of his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Now, over two decades later, their legacy has reached a new generation.

Rosemarie Terenzio, who served as chief of staff for Kennedy Jr.โ€™s political magazine, George, and is the co-author of the 2024 book โ€œJFK JR: An Intimate Oral Biography,โ€ said the couple captured the publicโ€™s imagination.

โ€œEverybody wanted to be like them, and everybody wanted to be with them. There is just something about them, that classic never goes out of style,โ€ she told TODAY in a segment that aired July 16, on the 26th anniversary of the coupleโ€™s death.

Kennedy Jr. and Bessette-Kennedy’s impact on the culture has endured, thanks to Instagram accounts that show photos of the couple and TikTok accounts that discuss their timeless style.

Jack Sehnert, who is the vice president of international design at Steve Madden, created an Instagram account about Bessette-Kennedy a decade ago. He says the public has developed a newfound appreciation for her.

โ€œJohn has been famous since the day he was born,โ€ he said on TODAY. โ€œWhat I think has happened over the last couple of years is that the focus and the spotlight really is shifting over to โ€” who is this woman who was the wife behind this incredibly storied man.โ€

โ€œThere was always this very, very strong line of simplicity and elegance that I think people are gravitating towards now, because it feels attainable, feels like something that we could all do,โ€ he added.

The interest in the couple doesnโ€™t appear to be slowing down anytime soon, either. A series about them from Ryan Murphy is expected to premiere next year on FX. Itโ€™s all part of the spotlight that continues to be shone on the couple.

โ€œJohn would have rolled his eyes and said, โ€˜Oh, brother.โ€™ And Carolyn, I think, would have been flattered and tickled,โ€ Terenzio said of how they would have reacted to the series and continued fame.

Kennedy Jr. was regarded as American royalty. He was the son of the 35th president of the United States, and in the wake of his fatherโ€™s assassination, he grew to be a symbol of hope, the heir apparent to a Camelot that was cut short.

In 1999, a plane piloted by the 38-year-old Kennedy Jr. crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing him, as well as Bessette-Kennedy and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette.

July 16 marks the grim anniversary of their deaths. But that day was only the beginning of a period of shock and uncertainty. Here, we take a look back at the events that surround the tragedy.ย

July 15, 1999

Kennedy Jr. made plans to attend the wedding of his cousin Rory Kennedy in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, on July 17. However, according to several sources at the time, his wife was upset and didnโ€™t want to accompany him.

In โ€œThe Kennedy Curse,โ€ author Edward Klein claimed that was the reason why, on Thursday, July 15, Bessette-Kennedyโ€™s sister offered to join the couple on the upcoming trip, at least as far as Marthaโ€™s Vineyard, where she intended to spend the weekend with friends.

July 16, 1999

RoseMarie Terenzio recalled that Bessette-Kennedyโ€™s reluctance to attend the wedding continued on the day of the flight.

In her 2012 book, โ€œFairy Tale Interrupted: A Memoir of Life, Love, and Loss,โ€ Terenzio explained that the 33-year-old, whoโ€™d been married to Kennedy for nearly three years at that point, had been feeling neglected by her husband.

โ€œIโ€™m not a priority,โ€ Terenzio remembered Bessette-Kennedy telling her. โ€œItโ€™s always something else. George. Somebody getting fired. An event. A trip to Italy to meet advertisers.โ€

According to Terenzio, sheโ€™s the one who finally convinced Bessette-Kennedy to go anyway.

โ€œI know, but nowโ€™s not the time to take a stand,โ€ she told her. โ€œHis whole family is going to be at this wedding, and you need to go with him. … You donโ€™t want to put John in a position where he has to explain where you are, and you donโ€™t want to put yourself in a position of being judged. You get enough of that.โ€

That night, Bessette-Kennedy and her sister joined JFK Jr. in his single-engine Piper Saratoga, and at 8:38 p.m., they departed from New Jerseyโ€™s Essex County Airport. Though it would be some time before anyone knew for certain, approximately an hour later, the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

July 17, 1999

In the early hours of Saturday morning, CNN reported that Kennedyโ€™s family contacted the Coast Guardย to report that his plane never arrived. Search and rescue efforts began before daylight, but by dayโ€™s end, hope was fading.

Debris from the flight was found about 200 yards off the coast of Marthaโ€™s Vineyard, along with Lauren Bessetteโ€™s suitcase.

โ€œThere is always hope,โ€ Coast Guard Lt. Gary Jones said, according to The Washington Post. โ€œBut unfortunately, when you find certain pieces of evidence, you have to be prepared for anything.โ€

Rory Kennedyโ€™s wedding was postponed.

On Sunday, as search efforts moved from rescue to recovery, Present Bill Clinton addressed the nation.

โ€œAs the search continues, I want to express our familyโ€™s support and offer our prayers and those of all Americans for John Kennedy Jr.; his wife, Carolyn; her sister, Lauren; and to their fine families,โ€ he said from the lawn of the White House.

He added, โ€œFor more than 40 years now, the Kennedy family has inspired Americans to public service, strengthened our faith in the future and moved our nation forward. Through it all, they have suffered much and given more.โ€

Several vessels, including the sonar-equipped National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrationโ€™s survey ship NOAAS Rude, launched underwater searches for the wreckage of the plane, per CNN.

July 20, 1999

The planeโ€™s fuselage was discovered at a depth of more than 100 feet, per CNN.

July 21, 1999

Search efforts ended on Wednesday, July 21, as Navy divers recovered the bodies of JFK Jr., Bessette-Kennedy and Bessette from the shattered fuselage.

Autopsies, which were conducted that evening, revealed that all three died on impact.ย

On Thursday, the Kennedy and Bessette families gathered aboard the Navy destroyer USS Briscoe for a burial at sea near the recovery site, the Post reported.

July 23, 1999

A mass was held in honor of Kennedy Jr. at New York Cityโ€™s Church of St. Thomas one week after his final flight. He was eulogized by his uncle Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

โ€œWe thank the millions who have rained blossoms down on Johnโ€™s memory,โ€ the senator said, according to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. โ€œHe and his bride have gone to be with his mother and father, where there will never be an end to love. He was lost on that troubled night, but we will always wake for him, so that his time, which was not doubled, but cut in half, will live forever in our memory, and in our beguiled and broken hearts.โ€

He added, โ€œWe dared to think … that this John Kennedy would live to comb gray hair, with his beloved Carolyn by his side. But like his father, he had every gift but length of years.โ€

July 6, 2000

Nearly one year after the crash, the Post reported that the National Transportation Safety Board determined the crash was likely caused by Kennedyโ€™s โ€œfailure to maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water at night, which was a result of spatial disorientation.โ€

The NTSB added, โ€œFactors in the accident were haze, and the dark night.โ€

The biggest loss: what could have been

JFK Jr. was an ambitious man with goals, both politically and socially, far broader than any heโ€™d realized by the time of his death.

โ€œHis legacy was really about who he wouldโ€™ve become,โ€ Brian Steel, his longtime friend, said in 2020. โ€œI just think America, and maybe the world, would have been a better place.โ€
