Does ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

Twenty-seven years after a hook-wielding murderer in a fisherman’s slicker terrorized a group of teens in Southport, North Carolina, a serial killer with a similar MO is on the loose.

2025’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a new movie with the same name as the 1997 slasher film, is less of a reboot and more of a sequel.

Similar to the original, the movie follows a group of teenagers โ€” Ava (Chase Sui Wonders), Milo (Jonah Hauer-King), Danica (Madelyn Cline), Stevie (Sarah Pidgeon) and Teddy (Tyriq Withers) โ€” who accidentally cause a major car accident that leads to a death. They flee the scene, get Teddy’s dad (Billy Campbell), a wealthy real estate developer, to cover up their involvement, and vow to never speak of what happened again. All appears to go as planned until the next year when Danica receives a threatening note with a pointed message on it: “I know what you did last summer.”

Danica’s fiancรฉ is murdered with a harpoon the same night, and two others are attacked by someone in a fishermanโ€™s slicker. Eventually, the group seeks out the help of survivors of the original Southport massacre, Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt).

What ensues is a twisty, scary dive back into the history of Southport and the social dynamics that resulted in at least one person becoming a killer. It’s full of plot twists, Easter eggs and surprising cameos โ€” including one in the very last moments of the film.

In “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the brutal killer targeting the group turns out to be killers. Stevie (Sarah Pidgeon), one of the friends who witnessed the car accident, turned out to be friends with the person who died. Overwhelmed by grief, she decided to get revenge and seek help from her boss โ€” none other thanย Ray Bronson.

The shocking twist came after Ray seemingly came to Ava’s aid and killed Stevie by shooting her.

But in a final showdown between exes Ray and Julie, who reluctantly returned to Southport in the wake of the attacks, Ray reveals that he helped Stevie in part because everyone in Southport seemingly forgot about the trauma he and his friends faced all those years ago. Over the course of the film, the new group of friends have to uncover what happened to Ray and Julie through deep archival research and local legend, as the horrifying events had been effectively covered up for the sake of attracting tourists to the beach town.

As a result of the cover-up, Ray helps Stevie exact revenge on her friends and on the town at large.

But as Julie distracts him by shouting out her iconic line, “What are you waiting for,” Ava shoots him in the back, killing him.

Ava reunites with Danica after they both spend some time in the hospital. While chatting on a bench, they reveal that Stevie is actually alive, establishing one lingering threat.

Then in a post-credits scene, Brandy reprises her role as Karla Wilson, who starred with Hewitt in the 1998 sequel, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” In that film, Julie and Karla go on a trip to the Bahamas and barely survive another killerโ€™s attacks.

In the post-credits scene, Karla watches the news of the Southport murders at home. As she hears how Ray attacked Julie and was behind a new string of killings in Southport, the camera pans to a view from outside Karla’s house. Then, ominous, suspenseful music starts playing, hinting that Karla might also be in danger. But when Karla gets to the door, it’s Julie James, her old college roommate.

After reuniting, Julie shows Karla an old photo of themselves, with red X’s over their faces โ€” a not so subtle indication that they’re on a killer’s list. Julie asks Karla for her help, and she responds simply by asking who they have to take down next.
