Cher is responding with grace to Michael Douglasโ viral diss over her 1988 Oscar win for โMoonstruck.โ A representative for the music and acting icon told Entertainment Weekly point blank: โCher adores Michael Douglas.โ
At the 60th Academy Awards in April 1988, Cher took home the prize for best actress over Douglasโ โFatal Attractionโ co-star Glenn Close. Douglas still disagrees with the Academyโs decision nearly 40 years later. Appearing alongside Close on a recent episode of โThe Graham Norton Show,โ Douglas noted that โshe should have won [the Oscar] with โFatal Attraction’โ and that Close โwas nominated, I believe, [for] her fourthโ Oscar by that time. When the actor noted Cher won the Oscar instead, Norton responded, โOh wow,โ prompting Douglas to diss Cher: โI know, thatโs what we all said!โ
โMichael, be kind,โ Close then responded while turning to Douglas as the studio audience laughed.
All three actors attended the 1988 Oscars as nominees, with Cher winning best actress for โMoonstruckโ and Douglas winning best actor for his role in Oliver Stoneโs โWall Street.โ Douglas was the sole nominee for his movie, while โMoonstruckโ was up for six awards, including best picture. The romantic comedy also won Oscars for adapted screenplay and supporting actress (Olympia Dukakis). โFatal Attraction,โ meanwhile, was also nominated for six Oscars but went home empty handed. Both movies battled for best picture and best director but lost to โThe Last Emperorโ and Bernardo Bertolucci, respectively.
As noted by Douglas, Close went into the 1988 Oscars as a four-time Oscar nominee. She had previously earned three nominations in the best supporting actress category for โThe World According to Garp,โ โThe Big Chillโ and โThe Natural.โ โFatal Attractionโ marked Closeโs first best actress nomination. She would go on to be nominated at the Oscars four more times for โDangerous Liaisons,โ โAlbert Nobbs,โ โThe Wifeโ and โHillbilly Elegy.โ She has yet to win a competitive Oscar but will be awarded an honorary statue at the Governors Awards this month.
Cher, meanwhile, won the Oscar for โMoonstruckโ after previously picking up a nomination for best supporting actress in 1984 for โSilkwood.โ
