Quentin Tarantino is writing a novel version of his โOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodโ spinoff โCliff Booth.โ It will debut later this year, timed to the release of the forthcoming film starring Brad Pitt, who reprises his Oscar-winning role as a longtime stuntman.
Tarantinoโs book is titled โThe Adventures of Cliff Booth,โ which differs slightly from the sequel movieโs moniker, โThe Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.โ David Fincher is directing the follow-up film for Netflix. Tarantino, who wrote the screenplay, also published a novelization of his 2019 feature โOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood.โ
Tarantinoโs latest novel will be published on Dec. 8 by HarperCollins. Thatโs after โThe Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Boothโ lands in Imax theaters on Nov. 25 and ahead of the movieโs Netflix bow on Dec. 23.
โCliff Booth,โ both the novel and movie, take place in Hollywood, 1977 โ eight years after the original story. In โOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood,โ Leonardo DiCaprio and Pitt portray an aging actor and his longtime stunt double who are struggling to find their place in show biz. Paying tribute to the golden age of Hollywood, โOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodโ was set in the late 1960s against the backdrop of the Manson family murders, with Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate, the up-and-coming actress married to director Roman Polanski.
Although plot details for the sequel have been kept under wraps, the novelโs logline teases that โthe Swinging Sixties are long gone โ but Clifford Booth keeps on keeping onโฆWar hero, stuntman, bartender, cinema projectionistโฆwith the occasional โclandestine servicesโ for his friendsโฆโ
Sony released โOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood,โ which was a critical and commercial hit. The movie earned more than $400 million at worldwide box office against a $90 million budget, in addition to 10 Oscar nominations and two wins. Netflix is producing the sequel, which carries a $200 million production budget.
Tarantino decided against directing โCliff Boothโ because heโs long expressed a desire to retire after making 10 movies. Heโs made nine already โ โPulp Fiction,โ โInglourious Basterdsโ and โReservoir Dogsโ among them โ and he didnโt want a sequel to be his last.
โI love this script, but Iโm still walking down the same ground Iโve already walked,โ Tarantino said last year on the โThe Church of Tarantinoโ podcast. โIt just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, Iโve got to not know what Iโm doing again. Iโve got to be in uncharted territory.โ
