Spider-Man Brand New Day Fastest to Pass $900 Million at Box Office

Two action flicks, Paramount’s “By Any Means” and A24’s “Onslaught,” arrived in theaters on Friday. But neither could dethrone “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which remains No. 1 in its sixth weekend in theaters.

“Spider-Man” added $3.9 million on Friday, pushing it past the mind-boggling milestone of $900 million domestically. It’s now the fastest movie to cross the benchmark — doing so in just 36 days — and it beats the 50-day record set by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The Marvel-Sony tentpole is projected to make $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, pushing its domestic total to $922 million. It’s only a matter of time until “Brand New Day” crosses $936 million and passes “The Force Awakens” as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time.

“By Any Means” performed the best of the two newcomers, earning $2.7 million domestically on Friday to finish fourth behind “Spider-Man,” “The Odyssey” and “Coyote vs. Acme.” Through the long weekend, the ’60s thriller is expected to make $8.5 million. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg headline the film, which sees a young FBI agent recruit a mafia hitman to help investigate the murders of civil rights leaders in 1960s Mississippi. Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton and LaChanze also star. Elegance Bratton directs with a screenplay by Sascha Penn.

“Onslaught” is failing to connect after only grossing $770,000 on Friday; it’s on pace to pull in just $2.3 million by Monday. Adria Arjona leads the action movie as Celeste, an army sniper who must protect her daughter from a squad of genetically engineered super soldiers. Other cast members include Dan Stevens, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, Michael Biehn, Blake Kennedy and Alex Pereira. “Godzilla vs. Kong” filmmaker Adam Wingard directs the film with a script by Simon Barrett.

Another July holdover, Universal’s “The Odyssey,” grossed $3 million on Friday, vaulting it to second place. Through Monday, it should pull in $16.4 million, pushing its North American haul to $588 million.

Ketchup Entertainment’s “Coyote vs. Acme,” which also launched last week, fared much better in its second weekend. On Friday, it collected $2.6 million, and by the end of the weekend, it should pull in about $15.3 million. That figure notches up the domestic total for the Looney Tunes comedy to $37.8 million.

20th Century’s “The Dog Stars” continues to struggle as it enters its second weekend. The dystopian drama made just $720,000 on Friday. By the end of its sophomore weekend, “The Dog Stars” is expected to earn $3.7 million, down from its disastrous $8 million opening.
