Shailene Woodley Found Out Her ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Mary Jane Scenes Were Cut a Year After Filming

More than 12 years later, Shailene Woodley has opened up about her disappointment in finding out that her part in โ€œThe Amazing Spider-Man 2โ€ opposite Andrew Garfield didnโ€™t make the final cut.

Woodley, in a recent interview as part of the โ€œSAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversationsโ€ series with actors about their craft, revealed that she found out a year after filming for โ€œThe Amazing Spider-Man 2โ€ that she would not appear in the movie, which was released in theaters in May 2014.

โ€œThat was a fun phone call,โ€ Woodley recalled.

She said that being cast as Mary Jane in the movie by director Marc Webb โ€œwas my dream because I really, oh my god, Spider-Manโ€™s my favorite superhero. Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, โ€˜This is so exciting.โ€™โ€

Woodley said she filmed โ€œlike three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then like a year later, they were like, โ€˜So, youโ€™re not in the movie anymore.โ€™ And I was like, โ€˜What? What do you mean?โ€™ And they were like, โ€˜Weโ€™ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and weโ€™re going to wait forโ€ฆ whatever happens between [Emma Stoneโ€™s character, Gwen Stacy, who is Peter Parkerโ€™s girlfriend in the film] and Andrew.โ€ (Spoiler: Gwen Stacy dies in โ€œThe Amazing Spider-Man 2.โ€)

Woodley said she was also told, โ€œโ€™Letโ€™s wait for [Gwen Stacy] to die and then weโ€™ll introduce Mary Jane.โ€™ Which made sense. But then they didnโ€™t make that film.โ€

Apparently, the filmmakers decided to axe Mary Jane from the movie because they thought it was confusing to have the character as another love interest to Peter Parker. โ€œWell, thatโ€™s what I was told, you know,โ€ Woodley said. โ€œBut again, who knows what the truth is. I could have been terrible and theyโ€™re like, โ€˜We canโ€™t do this.’โ€

In 2014, at the New York premiere of โ€œThe Amazing Spider-Man 2โ€ (which featured a Mary Jane-themed cocktail), producer Matt Tolmach told Variety this about the deletion of Woodleyโ€™s scenes: โ€œWe bit off more story than we could tell. We had a 148-page script. We were in the middle of that, and we realized this story [with Mary Jane] is not going to be in this movie.โ€

In Sam Raimiโ€™s Spider-Man movie trilogy, the role of Mary Jane was played by Kirsten Dunst opposite Tobey Maguire.

In Woodleyโ€™s nearly 90-minute โ€œSAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversationsโ€ interview, she also spoke about her performances in โ€œDivergent,โ€ โ€œDumb Money,โ€ โ€œThe Descendants,โ€ โ€œThe Fault in Our Stars,โ€ HBOโ€™s โ€œBig Little Liesโ€ and Season 2 of Huluโ€™s โ€œParadise.โ€
