Two of Dolly Partonโs most beloved movies are heading back to the big screen following the country music iconโs death on Tuesday.
Beginning on Friday, Aug. 28, AMC Theatres will offer special presentations of โSteel Magnoliasโ and โThe Best Little Whorehouse in Texasโ in approximately 200 locations across the U.S., including Partonโs home state of Tennessee. Participating theatres will offer two matinee screenings daily until Sept. 2 โ including one showing of each title โ at AMC Fan Faves value pricing.
Parton died Tuesday after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80. While she is best known as the queen of country music โ selling more than 100 million records and taking home 11 Grammy Awards โ the Nashville legend also made a significant impact in Hollywood. Parton made her film acting debut in 1980โs โ9 to 5,โ starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as Southern office secretary Doralee Rhodes. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for acting, as well as an Oscar nod for the title track.
For her follow-up, Parton played opposite Burt Reynolds in the 1982 musical comedy โThe Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.โ Parton earned another Golden Globe nod for her performance as Miss Mona Stangley, the proprietess of a brothel โ with Reynolds as the local sheriff and her secret lover โ as they fight to keep her business, the Chicken Ranch, open after itโs targeted by a moral crusader.
In the 1989 comedy-drama โSteel Magnolias,โ Parton demonstrated her acting range as part of an all-star ensemble that included Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. In the film, about a group of Southern women weathering lifeโs storms, Parton played Truvy Jones, a beauty technician whose wisdom was as potent as the hairspray that lifted her teased roots.
