‘Oswald’ Gets Live-Action Animated Series on Disney+

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of Disneyโ€™s earliest characters who predated Mickey Mouse, is back for the 21st century.

At the D23 fan event in Anaheim on Friday, Disney revealed the first look at its live action combined with hand-drawn 2D animation series โ€œOswald the Lucky Rabbitโ€ thatโ€™s being written, directed and executive produced by Jon Favreau. The series is coming to Disney+ as a three-part miniseries in February 2027.

The cast includes Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Ryder Allen.

Oswald was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 for Universal Pictures. The character proved to be a major milestone for Disney, as he and Iwerks created Mickey Mouse after Universal took control of Oswald in 1928. The Walt Disney Company reacquired the rights to the character in 2006, though it entered the public domain in 2023.

Cabot-Conyers previously starred in Disneyโ€™s โ€œStar Warsโ€ series โ€œSkeleton Crew,โ€ which was executive produced by Favreau, and voiced one of the Madrigal family members in โ€œEncanto.โ€ Harris voiced Blaze in this summerโ€™s โ€œToy Story 5โ€ and previously starred in โ€œMixed-ish.โ€ Sedaris and Favreau have collaborated already on โ€œThe Mandalorianโ€ and โ€œThe Book of Boba Fett.โ€ Meanwhile, Hahn is playing Mother Gothel in the live-action โ€œTangledโ€ remake.

Created just one year before Mickey Mouse, Oswald has attained cult status in Disney history. Heโ€™s largely vanished from pop culture and any of Disneyโ€™s titles, but he reappeared in the 2010 video game โ€œEpic Mickeyโ€ โ€” in which he and the famous mouse shared the screen for the first time. Oswald then made his first appearance in 85 years in the 2013 animated short โ€œGet a Horse!โ€
