AMD hints Microsoft could launch its next-gen Xbox in 2027

Microsoft confirmed last year that itโ€™s working on a next-gen Xbox console in partnership with AMD. Now, AMD is hinting that the next Xbox console, which will use custom AMD chips, could be launching in 2027.

โ€œDevelopment of Microsoftโ€™s next-gen Xbox, featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC, is progressing well to support a launch in 2027,โ€ said AMD CEO Lisa Su on an earnings call today. The brief comment doesnโ€™t confirm Microsoft will launch a new Xbox in 2027, but it does reveal that AMD is ready to support a launch then if Microsoft is also ready.

Microsoft entered a โ€œstrategic multi-year partnershipโ€ with AMD last year that includes the pair co-engineering silicon โ€œacross a portfolio of devices โ€” including our next-generation Xbox consoles in your living room and in your hands.โ€ AMD and Microsoft are also working together to build the next generation of Xbox Cloud Gaming servers.

Microsoft has been teasing that the next-gen Xbox will be some type of hybrid console and PC, with the Xbox Ally devices serving as the initial groundwork towards this end goal. โ€œThe next-gen console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience,โ€ said Xbox president Sarah Bond in October.

Microsoft hasnโ€™t put a date on its next-gen Xbox, and documents that leaked as part of the FTC v. Microsoft case originally pointed towards a potential 2028 release. Those documents, which donโ€™t reflect current plans anymore, mentioned using a custom AMD CPU as well as a co-designed AMD GPU.
