Ice-T on Why He Changed ‘Cop Killer’ Lyrics to ‘ICE Killer’

Ice-T recently told โ€œThe Breakfast Clubโ€ (via Entertainment Weekly) why he swapped the lyrics from his 1992 track โ€œCop Killerโ€ to โ€œICE Killerโ€ during a live performance. The Grammy winner explained that when he first did it during a Los Angeles show in July, it wasnโ€™t a premeditated change.

โ€œI have political things I think about,โ€ Ice-T said. โ€œNow when I did that, that didnโ€™t happen just recently. It happened when we played in L.A. at the Warped Tour. When I was there, ICE was active out there. So itโ€™s like, Iโ€™m in the midst of ICE raids and stuff like that, and Iโ€™m in front of an L.A. audience, and it just came out. I didnโ€™t know I was gonna do it.โ€

He added, โ€œMy brain just said, โ€˜Do โ€œICE Killer.โ€โ€˜ And it went over.โ€

Tensions with ICE have been at an all-time high in the U.S. following the killing of two American citizens at the hands of federal agents: Minnesota residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Ice-T maintained that whether he says โ€œCop Killerโ€ or โ€œICE Killer,โ€ the message is the same. He said of the songโ€™s purpose, โ€œIโ€™m just protesting.โ€

โ€œI think weโ€™re headed to some really ugly terrain,โ€ he said. โ€œAnd Black people really ainโ€™t got nothing to do with it. Itโ€™s bad. I think the moment somebody shoots an ICE agent, itโ€™s gonna get bad.โ€

Despite protesting with his music, Ice-T said the only ones who should have any authority on social issues are the people โ€œthat really carry it with them daily.โ€

โ€œIf thatโ€™s who you are. If itโ€™s not, donโ€™t do it for publicity. Donโ€™t do it for hype,โ€ he said. โ€œDonโ€™t let your publicist tell you, โ€˜Speak on this topic.โ€™ Because if youโ€™re not educated enough to speak on it, youโ€™re going to end up caught out there.โ€
