James Cameron revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he will hold a press conference to reveal the plot details of āAvatar 4ā³ and āAvatar 5ā if the franchise ends after āAvatar: Fire and Ash,ā the third movie in the franchise that is currently playing in theaters. The Oscar-winning director has been vocal on the āFire and Ashā press tour that the future of the āAvatarā franchise depends on the third movie being a financial success. Cameron is prepared to end the series if itās not.
āI donāt know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,ā Cameron told EW. āBut, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out⦠If we donāt get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, Iāll hold a press conference and Iāll tell you what we were gonna do. Howās that?ā
Cameron said his other option is to novelize his scripts for āAvatar 4ā and āAvatar 5,ā adding: āThereās so much culture and backstory and lateral detail in these characters thatās been worked out. Iād love to do something thatās at that level of granular detail.ā
During an interview with Variety, Cameron said āweāre getting ahead of ourselvesā when asked about āAvatar 4ā because āweāve got to make some money with this one. Every time we go out, we have to prove this crazy business case yet again. The world has changed. We all know the stats, where theatrical is. Itās been a bad year. Itās starting to perk up a little bit with a couple of recent releases: āWicked: For Goodā has done well, and āZootopia 2ā is doing well. So, weāll see.ā
It appears Cameron might not need to hold a press tour to reveal the final two āAvatarā movies because āFire and Ashā is performing quite well at the box office. The movie crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office after one week in theaters and is expected to have strong holds into the new year. The previous two āAvatarā movies both cleared the $2 billion mark worldwide.
Jon Landau, the franchiseās late producer,Ā let it slip to GizmodoĀ in 2022 that āAvatar 5ā brings the Naāvi characters to Earth, adding: āAnd we go to it to open peopleās eyes, open Neytiriās eyes, to what exists on Earth.ā
Cameron has left it up in the air whether or not he will direct the next two āAvatarā movies himself. He told EmpireĀ in 2022 that helming the franchise is āall-consumingā and he might want to āpass the batonā to another director starting with āAvatar 4.āĀ But he recently said before āFire and Ashāsā release that āthereās no reason not toā direct the next sequel himself.
āIām healthy, Iām good to go. Iām not going to rule it out,ā Cameron added. āI mean, Iāve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that⦠[but] if I can, Iāll just do it.ā
