Naomi Watts Is Jackie Kennedy in Pics From ‘American Love Story’

Naomi Watts is channeling her inner first lady.

The actor stars as Jackie Kennedy in a new Ryan Murphy series titled “American Love Story,” and viewers just got a first look at Watts’ transformation into the late matriarch of the Kennedy dynasty.

In one image, Watts looks distinguished in a tan trench coat, her signature oversized sunglasses and a printed scarf tied around her neck and worn around her head.

The photo shows the actor standing outside alongside Paul Kelly, who plays her onscreen son, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Another photo gives readers a better glimpse at Watts’ brunette locks as she stands with Kelly and Grace Gummer, who plays Caroline Kennedy.

The last photo shows viewers a full-body shot of Watts in character as she dons a bright red blouse and tan pants as she speaks with her onscreen son, who looks dapper in a light gray suit.

Per IMDB, “American Love Story” tells the story of “the courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, including their tragic deaths.” The couple died in a plane crash in 1999, three years after marrying.

In June, photos of Sarah Pidgeon playing Bessette prompted some critics to fear the show won’t properly capture the fashion icon’s sense of style.

As NBC News reported at the time, many critics noted that a handbag Pidgeon was wearing in one of the photos was not an exact match to the real one Bessette had worn. Her platinum blond hair color was also subject to criticism.

The show’s writer and executive producer, Ryan Murphy, responded in an interview with Variety, clarifying that the first look images were part of the preparation process and weren’t final costumes.

“If I ever do something like that again, I have to put a warning label on the top of the caption, explaining to people what the process is,” he said. “But I was trying to protect our actors from being absolutely swarmed by the paparazzi. But that’s on me. I made a mistake, and I’ve learned from it.”

In the interview, Murphy revealed that the show hired a 10-person “style advisory board” to help ensure that they captured Bessette’s sense of style.

After commencing in June, filming will most likely continue through late October, per Variety, and the show will premiere in February 2026.
