LoΓ―s Boisson, France’s revelation at Roland-Garros, sets out to discover Wimbledon’s grass courts

At 22, LoΓ―s Boisson, the French player who caused a sensation by reaching the French Open semifinals, began her Wimbledon qualifying campaign on Monday, June 23, aiming to reach the main draw of the London Grand Slam for the first time. Ranked 361st in the world before the Paris tournament, she now stands at 67th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

In theory, this ranking would allow her to qualify directly for Wimbledon’s main draw, being eligible for the top 104 women in the world. However, organizers determine the entry list based on rankings from about six weeks before the tournament begins, so before Roland-Garros. As a result, Boisson must battle through the tricky qualifying rounds. The player from Dijon should, however, secure direct entry into the US Open (August 24–September 7), the season’s final Grand Slam, thanks to her current ranking.

At Wimbledon, Boisson could have received a wild card. However, the Frenchwoman’s lack of experience on grass worked against her. The organizers preferred to allocate seven of their eight golden tickets to British players. This year, the only foreign wild card went to Czech player Petra Kvitova, 35, a two-time Wimbledon champion (2011 and 2014). Wimbledon’s qualifying competition will take place from June 23 to 26 at the Roehampton Community Sports Center.
