Who Are The Seraphites And Their Prophet?

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3 of โ€œThe Last of Us,โ€ which aired April 27.

โ€œThe Last of Usโ€ Season 2 has already introduced new characters, with more on their way.

The third episode of the post-apocalyptic drama based on the popular video game featured a new group of people that viewers havenโ€™t seen before: the Seraphites.

โ€œYou do see them briefly in this episode,โ€ Tati Gabrielle, who portrays Nora, told TODAY.com during a Max and Complex special screening of the showโ€™s third episode.

The scene includes a man with a shaved head sending a message to another group by whistling. He then asks a young red-headed girl what the whistle means.

โ€œNo one following, all clear, keep moving,โ€ she replies, before asking why canโ€™t she know where they are headed.

โ€œBecause we donโ€™t know yet,โ€ the man replies. โ€œI told you the reason weโ€™re going.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ the girl says, adding, โ€œWhy canโ€™t she just keep us safe?โ€

The man, however, tells the girl, who viewers find out is named Constance, that the โ€œprophetโ€ has been dead 10 years and they wouldnโ€™t count on her to keep them safe.

Constance also mentions a man named Ezra, who is a supporter of the prophet, and noted that the prophet is โ€œeternal.โ€

โ€œA prophet isnโ€™t magic. Theyโ€™re just people that see truths hidden from others and share that truth no matter what the cost,โ€ the man says. โ€œSo it was with our Prophet, and thatโ€™s how we keep her spirit alive, follow her words, we obey her teachings, but we keep ourselves safe.โ€

A whistle then indicates danger and the Seraphites take cover. When Constance asks if the threats are โ€œdemons,โ€ the man replies, โ€œwolves.โ€

However, he means the WLF, theย Washington Liberation Front, known as wolves, and the militant paramilitary organization that Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her crew form part of.

By the end of the episode, the group, along with Constance and the man, are dead.

Who are the Seraphites?

Seraphites make an appearance in the โ€œThe Last of Us Part IIโ€ video game and are a primitivist cult and antagonistic faction. They are at conflict with the WLF.

The group follows their prophet’s teachings, who, according to the game’s Wiki, believed the Cordycepsย brain infection was a punishment for mankindโ€™s sins.

Gabrielle, who plays the video games that inspired the show, tells TODAY that Seraphites โ€œhave their own practices and their own belief system that they follow.โ€

The actor said it is interesting to see what different groups within this world “will lean into to make sure that they survive.”

โ€œDo you lean into faith? Do you lean into militia and order? Do you lean into family life like you see in Jackson?โ€ Gabrielle said. โ€œWith the Seraphites, itโ€™s a very different perspective or way of going about (life).โ€

While Season 1 only showed the community of Jackson, Wyoming and Fireflies, Gabrielle said, introducing a new group into the show โ€œexpands the world and expands your mind.โ€

โ€œI think it makes the show in this reality even more grounded because in the world we donโ€™t have just one kind of person or one kind of belief system,โ€ Gabrielle said.

โ€œSo to be introduced toย the Seraphites, youโ€™ll see that they have a very particular look about them. You very much know upon seeing them, this is not any other group that weโ€™ve seen before.โ€

One can only assume that their history will be further explained in the upcoming episodes.
