Some things never change. In the case of Jennifer Garner and Judy Greer, being co-stars and besties is kind of a lifelong thing.
The pair played best friends 21 years ago in “13 Going on 30″and reunited on-screen for “The Last Thing He Told Me” Season 2, which is anticipated to arrive on Apple TV+ late this year. They also are close friends in real life, Greer says.
“Have you ever worked with one of your best friends? It’s really hard to get anything done,” Greer tells TODAY.com of filming the AppleTV+ show. “When we were at the studio, sometimes we would have to separate ourselves because it’s just too fun.”
“We’ve realized that we have to work together a lot because it’s the best way to hang out,” she adds. “We’re both so busy otherwise.”
Still, they’ve maintained an off-camera connection over the years, and Greer let us in on the sweet personalized gifts the friends have swapped.
“She bought us these sweatshirts a long time ago that said ‘Jen Garner and Judy Greer,’” she says. “And then I got us ‘JG’ necklaces as like a Christmas present. I don’t know, we’re dorks. We’re friend dorks.”
Just as she’s played the spunky best friend in films like “The Wedding Planner” and “27 Dresses,” friendship has been a nonnegotiable priority in Greer’s personal life for decades.
“I’d be nothing without my friends,” she says. “I’m a big believer in working to maintain friendships. I think that there’s a lot of focus on romantic relationships, especially when we’re in our 20s and 30s.
“I think that working to maintain our friendships is just as, if not more important,” she adds. “Because in a romantic relationship, you’re around that person, in theory, most days or every day. Friendships you really have to stick to it. You have to keep at it.”
To be a great friend, you have to have great friends. And Greer shares that Garner is exactly the kind of friend everyone needs in their corner.
“She’s exactly the kind of friend you would imagine,” Greer said. “People are like, ‘what’s she really like?’ I’m like, ‘She’s really like that, whatever you’re thinking.’ She’s perfect in every way. She’s better than the rest of us. She’s somehow superhuman.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever read a text message from her that didn’t make me laugh,” she continues.
As for whether they’d ever reunite for “13 Going on 30” sequel?
“If someone wants to pay us to do that, I could imagine that we would do it. But there’s nothing in the works,” she says.
