Spoilers ahead for Season 3 of “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”
It appears Team Jeremiah has been losing some fans as the third and final season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” airs.
The new season of the Prime Video coming-of-age show kicked off with a four-year time jump that sees Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) coupled up and attending Finch University together.
The pair, after a dramatic minor break up, get engaged and begin planning their wedding against their parents’ wishes. And while the first couple of seasons fans were torn between Team Jeremiah and his brother Team Conrad (Christopher Briney), it appears Jere has been dubbed “one of the internet’s most hated boyfriends,” according to The New York Times.
The actor responded to fans’ reactions, reminding people that he is not his character.
“They tend to dislike him, yes. I don’t check Instagram anymore, so I really haven’t seen that much hate,” he told the newspaper. “The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny. I think it’s important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story — and it’s also not me.”
He continued, “I don’t think there’s a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens. And I think that’s why Amazon did a good job of stepping in and being like, ‘Hey, no bullying.’ Though, not really going so well.”
People online have criticized Jeremiah’s actions, including cheating on Belly when had briefly broken up and calling him selfish for choosing to stay in Boston, among other things.
Casalegno noted that he hasn’t watched the show this season but despite the backlash, he called it a “dream job.”
“At the end of the day, it’s work — it’s an amazing job, a dream job — but it is still work,” he said.
Fans can continue to see who Belly ultimately ends up with when “The Summer I Turned Pretty” drops its finale on Sept. 17.
