South Park Community Partners propose a $21M transformation of Symphony Park into a vibrant community hub.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Big changes could be on the horizon for Symphony Park. South Park Community Partners unveiled a $21 million proposal aimed at turning the space into a vibrant community destination—not just a green space.
The 7.5-acre area, located beside South Park Mall, may be known as Symphony Park, but city leaders say the plan is much more ambitious. The goal? To create a true community hub that blends nature, retail, and events.
“I think Symphony Park is a cornerstone of the South Park area,” Brad Stone, a South Park resident, said.
For neighbors like Stone, the park serves as a favorite spot to walk dogs, exercise, and relax. But the new plan, presented to Charlotte City Council Monday night, promises major upgrades.
-
Expanded lawn areas for concerts and events
-
A new trail segment
-
Bridges to improve access
-
Permanent public restrooms
-
And most notably, new retail
Simon Property Group, which owns South Park Mall, plans to add two restaurants at the edge of the park and attract local vendors with micro-retail storefronts.
“Growth is no secret to the Charlotte community,” Stone said. “South Park keeping up with that growth is only inevitable. I think it’s a great way for new local businesses to be attracted to the area.”
City leaders are optimistic about what the project could mean for SouthPark’s future.
“This is just the starting point of what I believe will be many phases of growth,” said City Council Member Tariq Bokhari. “As you see in here, there’s economic development aspects to this, a bridge into the retail area of what the mall will feature—it’s an opportunity to connect the walkability.”
The $21 million project would be a public-private partnership, with $13 million coming from private investment and $8 million requested in public funding from the city.
The plan is still in its early stages, but momentum and support are growing.
