Sydney Sweeney’s Brother Jokes About ‘Good Jeans’ Controversy

Sydney Sweeneyโ€™s younger brother, Trent Sweeney, posted an Instagram story on Aug. 6 poking fun at the conversation surrounding his sisterโ€™s controversial American Eagle campaign.

Trent Sweeney, who is in the U.S. Air Force, recently celebrated his promotion to staff sergeant by uploading an image of his official certificate on social media. The 25-year-old slid in a reference to recent chatter surrounding his sister.

โ€œItโ€™s them good jeans,โ€ a text box on the image reads, paired with a mustache face emoji.

The story points to backlash surrounding Sydney Sweeneyโ€™s campaign with American Eagle. The collaboration has stirred up controversy with its word play with โ€œgenesโ€ and โ€œjeans.โ€

Advertisements for the brandโ€™s new denim line feature scenes of Sydney Sweeney zipping up her jeans, videoing herself in a white tank and fixing a car โ€” all punctuated by the tagline โ€œSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.โ€

โ€œGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My genes are blue,โ€ Sweeney says in one of the advertisements.

Critics say that the ad contains racially charged undertones and harmful Eurocentric beauty standards.

Trent Sweeneyโ€™s post jokes about the campaign by pointing out his shared โ€œgenesโ€ with the star. While he directly calls out the campaign by using the spelling โ€œjeans,โ€ he also seems to imply that his recent promotion proves he comes from an accomplished family.

While Sydney Sweeney has not yet publicly spoken out about the controversy herself, on Aug. 1, American Eagle stood by the ad with a statement on Instagram.

โ€œโ€˜Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeansโ€™ is and always was about the jeans,โ€ the post read.

The conversation was reignited by a new Dunkinโ€™ ad that also nodded at genetics โ€” this time, actor Gavin Casalegno.

โ€œCampaigns like this go through many hands, including creative, legal, PR, and brand strategy, so itโ€™s unlikely that no one flagged the potential issue,โ€ Adrienne Alexander, owner of the PR firm IPY Agency, previously told TODAY.com.

โ€œMore likely, the team underestimated the reaction or saw it as a playful pun rather than a loaded phrase. Either way, the responsibility remains the same: if you spark a conversation, be prepared to own it and respond accordingly,โ€ she adds.
