To this day, Reese Witherspoon is โhauntedโ by a speech she gave at an awards show that resulted in the end of a friendship.
While interviewing each other for People, Witherspoon asked her โYou’re Cordially Invitedโ co-star Will Ferrell if heโs ever given a speech heโs regretted.
Ferrell said he didn’t think so, but the Oscar winner clearly had a story to share. Witherspoon explained that years ago while introducing a โvery serious, proper actressโ at a British event, she accidentally roasted her, which led to a falling out.
โSo this friend of mine, who I didnโt really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress, and she asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast,” Witherspoon said. “So I got up, and I roasted her.โ
โBut that was not the tone,โ Ferrell clarified.
โNo, the tone was British, elegant, classy, and I was like, โRemember the time we got laser hair removal?โโ she recalled with a laugh. โIโm still embarrassed about it. Weโre not friends anymore. Iโm not even kidding โ weโre not friends anymore. I think she doesnโt like me anymore.โ
Without naming the actor, Witherspoon added, โI thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience… It was pretty bad. Not even kidding, she doesnโt talk to me anymore. Oh well.โ
As for the right audience, Witherspoon and Ferrell are making people laugh with their new comedy, โYou’re Cordially Invited, out now. In it, they play two people who discover that their family members’ weddings were booked at the same venue on the same day. The movie also co-stars Nick Jonas as a โhot pastor,โ they teased.
The actors began their joint interview by reminiscing about the first time they worked together on โSaturday Night Liveโ in 2001. Witherspoon shared that sheโs a big fan of the comedian and that his film โTalladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobbyโ is her familyโs favorite, along with โElf.โ
