A recent work trip taken by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, doubled as a sweet getaway for their 14th wedding anniversary.
The couple, who famously tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in a globally televised ceremony in 2011, are currently abroad in Scotland. On April 29, the day of their 14th wedding anniversary, the duo shared a romantic photo on their official X account of them embracing while staring out into the sea.
“Wonderful to be back on the Isle of Mull,” they wrote in the tweet. “Thank you to everyone for such a warm welcome.” They signed the post with “W & C” and included a red heart.
A day before their anniversary, Prince William and the former Kate Middleton uploaded a video to X previewing their two-day trip to the Isle of Mull, which is located on Scotland’s west coast.
The clip highlighted the isle’s grand castles, blue waters and many animals.
“Looking forward to arriving in Mull tomorrow for two days celebrating and connecting with rural island communities in the beautiful Inner Hebrides,” the tweet said.
In another post, the royals said they were looking forward to “celebrating the power of community and connection” during their work trip.
They also shared additional photos on April 29 of them greeting locals and petting some of the wildlife.
During a segment on TODAY about how the British royals chose to commemorate their marriage, NBC’s Keir Simmons said, “Scotland (is) a special place for William and Kate, who met there over 20 years ago while both were college students at the University of St. Andrew’s.”
They graduated together in 2005 and the late Queen Elizabeth II attended the ceremony, Simmons reported.
NBC News royal contributor Katie Nicholl said on TODAY: “They deliberately chose to be working on their wedding anniversary. They want to be in Scotland, somewhere that’s really special to them.”
Simmons said the trip, according to royal officials, “aims to highlight the importance of protecting the environment,” a cause that is important to the pair.
The Prince and Princess of Wales celebrated their anniversary last year by sharing a never-before-seen black-and-white picture that they took on the day of their wedding.
“13 years ago today!” the caption said.
A year ago, William had resumed his royal duties and his wife had stepped away from the public eye to undergo chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
She announced in January that her cancer is in remission.
“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal,” she said in a statement shared on Instagram.
Kate continued, “My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.”
