Panthers stadium rezoning petition approved

The city has previously committed $650 million to the project.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ€” The Charlotte City Council approved a rezoning petition Monday night that paves the way for major renovations to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthersย and Charlotte FC.

The unanimous decision changes approximately 25.30 acres from Uptown Core zoning to Uptown Core with Exception designation, accommodating the stadium’s unique design needs that don’t fit standard zoning requirements.

The Panthers’ ownership group filed the petition in December to bring the venue into compliance with Charlotte’s Unified Development Ordinance. The approval comes after the city already committed $650 million for stadium renovations last year.

Under the approved plan, the Panthers have committed to providing at least 25% more publicly accessible open space than ordinarily required, which will function as public plazas and festival spaces. The plan also includes two key pedestrian pathways: one connecting Morehead Street and Mint Street, and another extending from the practice facilities via a railroad underpass tunnel to Graham Street.

During the zoning committee’s deliberations, members emphasized the importance of these pedestrian connections not only for event attendees but for the broader community’s daily use.

The stadium site is located along the proposed LYNX Silver Line transit corridor, which officials believe will enhance public access to what they called “an economic hub and community focal point.”

Previously announced renovation plans include exterior LED screens, new signage, upgraded seating, modernized restrooms, enhanced sound and video systems, and a skyline viewing patio. The project also aims to improve sustainability with LED lighting, solar panels, and a new HVAC system.

The rezoning approval represents the final regulatory hurdle before construction can begin on the renovations.

Tepper Sports & Entertainment, the group that owns the Panthers, has not commented on the development.
