New company announced for Charlotte, North Carolina

DetraPel CEO David Zamarin said the city has a “pro-business environment”.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ€” There’s a new company bringing its headquarters to Charlotte soon.

On Tuesday, DetraPel announced plans to relocate its headquarters and manufacturing operations to Charlotte, investing $3.5 million and creating more than 30 new jobs. It will establish a 40,000-square-foot facility in southwest Charlotte, with operations set to begin late in the spring or early in the summer.

The company said new positions will include engineering, research and development, technical and back-office roles, with an average salary of $71,794, exceeding the metropolitan statistical area average.

DetraPel, founded by CEO David Zamarin in 2013 at the age of 15 years old, produces protective coatings that are free of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”. DetraPel creates coatings used in the food and beverage, beauty, healthcare, textiles and electronics industries. Zamarin made a name for himself and the company in a 2018 episode of the “Shark Tank” television program — earning offers from four of the five sharks.

ย Zamarin said in a news release the move to Charlotte makes sense because of what he believes the area has to offer.

โ€œAs DetraPel has evolved into a leading barrier coating company, we have sought a location that reflects our ambitious vision,โ€ he said. ย โ€œToday marks a significant milestone in our companyโ€™s journey as we officially announce Charlotte as the new home for our headquarters and manufacturing operations. With its pro-business environment, thriving advanced manufacturing sector and deep talent pool, Charlotte is the ideal choice for our continued growth. We are grateful for the support of the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County throughout the process and look forward to fostering new opportunities as we expand our presence in the region.โ€

The company said Charlotte was picked after an extensive search across the Southeast, where nearly 70% of DetraPel’s domestic business is concentrated.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles welcomed the announcement, saying it “speaks to Charlotte’s dynamic business environment and our healthy ecosystem that welcomes innovation.” Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners chair Mark Jerreell also shared praise for the announcement.

โ€œAs a county, we strive to ensure that we remain the ideal place for our residents to live, learn, work and recreate,โ€ said Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chair Mark Jerrell. โ€œThe decision for DetraPel to move their headquarters here complements our efforts.โ€

This relocation adds to Charlotte and Mecklenburg County’s recent economic development wins, which include expansions by groninger USA, RXO, and Siemens Energy. These projects have collectively brought more than $458 million in capital investment and 1,381 new jobs to the area.
